Johnson C. Smith University helped to promote athletic programs in Charlotte by participating in the annual River Roar on June 8 to support the Charlotte Sports Commission. The university’s silver sponsorship included an opportunity to register a rafting team in the event. This year’s JCSU team placed first in the college division against the UNC-Charlotte 49ers and Johnson and Wales University.
Six digital prints by Cynthia Cole, professor of photography and graphic design at Johnson C. Smith University, will be shown at a premier event “Art Takes Times Square” on June 18 in New York City. Cole and other visual artists from around the world will display their pieces that evening on the Jumbotron screens in Times Square from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and on smaller screens around the city during the day.
Record number of students at Johnson C. Smith University find internships in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
This summer, 79 students in Johnson C. Smith University’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program are interning at institutions around the world. They include paid internships at Wake Forest University, Georgia Tech and East Carolina University.
Johnson C. Smith University will hold a memorial service on June 9 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Jane A. Smith Memorial Chapel on campus in honor of Dr. Joseph Fail, the university’s associate professor of biology, who passed away on May 30.
Prospective students enjoyed a preview of JCSU on May 19 during Admitted Day, an event held to acquaint 151 students, parents and families with the nuts and bolts of entering the college experience. Since many incoming freshmen at Johnson C. Smith are the first generation in their families to attend college, the event provided essential information and assurance needed for both students and their families to realize that higher education is affordable and attainable.
Johnson C. Smith University’s Shawana Wilson Selected for International Complexity Science Summer School at Santa Fe Institute, New Mexico
Shawana A. Wilson, a biology major at Johnson C. Smith University, is one of fifty-seven leading international student researchers in computational modeling and applied research, selected for the 2012 Complexity Science Summer at Santa Fe Institute, New Mexico.
Johnson C. Smith University senior Shavonda Price along with juniors Akino Ming and Xahnn-Georgia Reid were among the twenty student-athletes from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association named to the 2012 CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Team. JCSU had the most student-athletes elected to the First Team of the 12 CIAA institutions.
Students and educators from area colleges and universities will interact with some of the nation’s most influential political leaders during the week of the Democratic National Convention at a event titled “UFuture - A Summit for Innovative Young Thinkers.”
The Johnson C. Smith University men’s and women’s outdoor track & field teams will have 11 student-athletes competing in the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Colorado State University-Pueblo inside the Neta & Eddie DeRose ThunderBowl between May 24-26.
