N.C. Senator Malcolm Graham is scheduled to host the Affordable Care Act Summit “Obamacare,” at Johnson C. Smith University on Oct. 22 in Biddle Hall from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The summit will provide the citizens of Charlotte-Mecklenburg with information about the Affordable Care Act (ACA): what it is and how to enroll.
Johnson C. Smith University will celebrate Homecoming 2013, “Smith Made,” beginning Monday, Oct. 21. The activity lineup includes the coronation induction ceremony, pep rally, National Pan-Hellenic Council step show, parade, annual FestiVille celebration, Homecoming game, and the alumni gala. A pep rally will start in the Jack S. Brayboy Gymnasium at 3 p.m. on Oct. 25 to build excitement before the Golden Bulls football game against Shaw University on Saturday, Oct. 26.
For Hasaan Kirkland, associate professor of fine art at Johnson C. Smith University, art has always been second nature. He started taking interest in his craft at a young age, drawing cartoons and race cars with his older brother on paper, but now his new canvas is a wall outside of the Arts Factory on West Trade Street near campus.
The National Science Foundation has awarded a $399,536 grant to Johnson C. Smith University to transform the research component of its science and math programs. The grant will fund an initiative titled "Targeted Infusion Project: Developing a Shared Instrument Resource Laboratory at JCSU."
Trustees of The Duke Endowment have approved a $3.4 million grant to help four schools in the Carolinas collaborate on increasing student resilience.
This month U.S. News & World Report released its 2014 edition of the Best Colleges Report. Included are several ranking lists. Among them is the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) ranking, which lists Johnson C. Smith University as number 14 out of a total of 70 HBCUs ranked.
The James B. Duke Memorial Library at Johnson C. Smith University has received a $94,417 grant from the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) to digitize the James Gibson Peeler collection.
The August issue of U.S. Airways Magazine includes an article about Johnson C. Smith University in a special segment on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The article is titled “Leading Innovation – Combining Cutting-Edge Technology with Community Engagement.” It draws attention to the University’s STEM program, Innovo Laboratory, student volunteerism, campus improvements and athletics.
Johnson C. Smith University in conjunction with the Coca-Cola Bottling Company Consolidated will be conducting the JCSU/Coca-Cola MasterBULL Griller Cook-off at each of the home Golden Bull football games this season. There are no entry fees for the contest, but all participants must purchase a JCSU tailgate space to compete.
