Charlotte, N.C., January 21, 2013- For sophomore Danyell Mitchell, college was not always an option. As a youth growing up in foster care in Cleveland, Ohio, she had little or no guidance about how to get into college, let alone pay for it. Even the application process proved daunting. “College was not an option in my head because I knew I couldn’t afford it,” said Mitchell. But in the back of her mind was a nagging desire to become the first in her family to attend.
For the second consecutive year, Johnson C. Smith University will be among colleges and universities around the nation featured on the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) and BET network Annual Special An Evening of Stars® on Jan. 27 at 10 p.m. The variety show is created to focus public attention on America's need for more African American college graduates and UNCF's work getting students to and through college.

Twelve group sessions will be held Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at the HealthPlex located near Brayboy Gymnasium. The goal of the program is to help participants learn how to maintain healthy lifestyles by creating good eating habits and exercising regularly.
