International Student Brings Unique Perspective to Johnson C. Smith University as a Survivor of Genocide in Rwanda

Charlotte, N.C., -- January 24, 2013 -- During the past year, an outdoor space on the Johnson C. Smith University campus has taken on a new look that draws attention to our increasing emphasis on global education. The exterior wall of the student union displays the words “The World is Your Home” as a testament of the growing diversity at JCSU. JCSU Makes College Possible for Youth Who Age Out of Foster Care

Charlotte, N.C., January 21, 2013- For sophomore Danyell Mitchell, college was not always an option. As a youth growing up in foster care in Cleveland, Ohio, she had little or no guidance about how to get into college, let alone pay for it. Even the application process proved daunting. “College was not an option in my head because I knew I couldn’t afford it,” said Mitchell. HealthPlex Offers Community Weight Management Program

Charlotte, N.C., - Jan. 8, 2013 – Beginning Jan. 22, Johnson C. Smith University’s HealthPlex will offer a free weight management program for the community of the Northwest Corridor. Twelve group sessions will be held Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at the HealthPlex located near Brayboy Gymnasium. The goal of the program is to help participants learn how to maintain healthy lifestyles by creating good eating habits and exercising regularly.

Charlotte, N.C., - Nov. 16, 2012 – The Environmental Defense Fund has recognized Johnson C. Smith University for its outstanding commitment to a clean energy future and cultivation of the next generation of environmental leaders. As part of Johnson C. Smith University’s sustainability efforts, the University is involved with the Environmental Defense Fund’s Climate Corps program. The pioneering summer fellowship program places specially trained MBA and MPA students in companies, cities and universities to research and promote energy efficiency.
