Tuition comprises less than half the cost of a JCSU education. The remaining amount comes from endowment income and gifts.
Charlotte, N.C., - Nov. 29, 2012 – Partnering with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, Johnson C. Smith University hosted the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) day Oct. 20, for more than 20 students from Charlotte Mecklenburg high schools. University students in an educational psychology class planned and organized the event to help the participants gain insight into college life.

Charlotte, N.C. Nov. 20, 2012 -- On October 26, Johnson C. Smith University officially opened HealthPlex, a new facility designed to promote health and wellness on campus and in the community. Located next to Jack S. Brayboy Gymnasium, the 5,600-square-foot facility houses the university’s Applied Health Research Center and Wellness Department.
Charlotte, N.C., - Nov. 16, 2012 – The Environmental Defense Fund has recognized Johnson C. Smith University for its outstanding commitment to a clean energy future and cultivation of the next generation of environmental leaders. As part of Johnson C. Smith University’s sustainability efforts, the University is involved with the Environmental Defense Fund’s Climate Corps program. The pioneering summer fellowship program places specially trained MBA and MPA students in companies, cities and universities to research and promote energy efficiency. This program is designed to cut pollution by overcoming barriers that prevent organizations from investing in energy efficiency.
Charlotte, N.C., - Nov. 8, 2012 – As a senior English education major at Johnson C. Smith University, Lauren Simmons has a jump start on graduate school. After attending an eight-week summer doctoral program at University of California-Riverside, she went through the process of writing a dissertation. Such an experience will better prepare her to fulfill her dream of eventually earning a doctorate in education psychology or education policy. Simmons and classmates Asia Mapp and Jenelle Martin were among six students selected across the nation to attend the Lindon Barrett Scholars Mentoring Program at Riverside this past summer.
Charlotte, N.C., - Nov. 1, 2012 – The nationally acclaimed exhibit, “COURAGE: The Carolina Story that Changed America,” officially opened to the public today at Johnson C. Smith University’s James B. Duke Memorial Library. The exhibit is on a long-term loan from the Levine Museum of the New South.
Charlotte, N.C., October 30, 2012 – Johnson C. Smith University is teaming up with Microsoft Corporation to improve technology teaching and learning as part of an innovative partnership available to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The partnership was signed on Oct. 25 during the groundbreaking ceremony for the university’s new Science Center, scheduled for completion in 2014.
Johnson C. Smith University recently crowned Mr. and Miss. Johnson C. Smith University at the 2012 Coronation Ceremony during Homecoming Week. Michael De’Mario Bailey and Yolanda Amalia Babb were crowned king and queen during an evening ceremony on Oct 21.
The Johnson C Smith University football team set some historically marks with their 27-21 Homecoming victory over Saint Augustine’s University on Saturday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Complex. JCSU improves to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in CIAA, while St. Augustine’s drops to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in conference. The Golden Bulls have won three consecutive games for the first time since the 2006 season.
More than 200 guests enjoyed the annual Big Hitters reception in Grimes Lounge following the Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Office of Institutional Advancement sponsored the event to thank alumni and friends who have given $1,000 or more to the University during the past year. Guests also included members of the 1867 Society, which includes those who have given more than $10,000 since the year 2000.
