Three Golden Bulls elected to the 2012 CIAA Commissioner's All-Academic Team
Hampton, VA (May 25, 2012) – Johnson C. Smith University senior Shavonda Price along with juniors Akino Ming and Xahnn-Georgia Reid were among the twenty student-athletes from the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association named to the 2012 CIAA Commissioner’s All-Academic Team. JCSU had the most student-athletes elected to the First Team of the 12 CIAA institutions.
Ming, a Communications major from St. Thomas, Jamaica, earned a nod as a member of the Golden Bulls’ indoor and outdoor track & field team with a 3.82 grade point average. During the 2012 NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Championships, Ming placed second overall in the 400m. He received his second All-American award as a member of the 4x400m relay team.
Ming is the 2012 CIAA Outdoor Champion for the 200m and 400m. He ranks No. 1 in the nation with a time of 45.81 in the 400m. He is the only DII athlete to run the 400m under 46 seconds this season, a feat which he has achieved twice. He will compete in the 2012 NCAA DII Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 200m, 400m and 4x400m relay.
Price, a Communication Arts major from Fort Wayne, IN, had a stellar senior season to receive this accolade. She was selected for the first time to the All-CIAA team and as an All-American as the top scorer for the JCSU women’s basketball. Price played in all 29 games and started 24. She finished 4th in the CIAA for points per game, averaging a team-high 14.6 points. Price was also 4th in the league for steals. She had a team-high total 71 steals this year with an average of 2.4 steals per game. Price maintained a GPA of 3.68.
Reid is a Biology major from Clarendon, Jamaica and member of the women’s indoor and outdoor track & field team. She earned the 2012 CIAA Outdoor Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete Award by placing second in the long jump (5.93m, SB), high jump (1.65m) and fourth in the triple jump (11.60m) at championships. Reid has a grade point average of 3.851 and will compete in the long jump event at the 2012 NCAA DII Outdoor Championships.
Lolia Kienka from the Shaw University women’s tennis team and Christopher Copeland from the St. Augustine’s College men’s track & field program were named CIAA Female and Male Scholar Athletes of the Year, respectively.
To be eligible for the Commissioner’s All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have completed one full academic year at a CIAA institution, earned a minimum 3.20 overall grade point average and have excelled as a starter or significant reserve in a CIAA sanctioned sport.
