Study to Give Voice to Northwest Corridor

Charlotte, N.C. (July 16, 2013) – Johnson C. Smith University is partnering with the Northwest Corridor Indaba on a public opinion project to help residents understand and influence effective political leadership and representation of the Northwest Corridor. The Indaba is a community forum representing 30 neighborhoods and businesses in the Northwest Corridor. The group works with elected officials representing the area and civic leaders throughout Charlotte.

The project, called “Giving Voice to the Northwest Corridor,” will kick off with a leadership audit for residents to complete online at  The project is described in a new video produced by JCSU international student Zwelabo Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela. It may be viewed at:

Results from the survey will help the community prepare for upcoming elections by engaging, educating and empowering residents to get more involved in recruiting leaders and providing candidates with information. Specifically, the research will help:

  • determine what residents want from their elected leadership
  • create a candidate job description
  • provide each candidate with the information needed to determine if a particular political office is the job best matched

Results from the study will be presented August 31 from 8 a.m. to noon at a public forum at Johnson C. Smith University. Candidates for the fall elections will be invited to attend the forum and  participate in an open dialogue about community issues and their platforms. They will also create a clear set of performance measurements for candidates to help them reach their goals.

“This project is part of our ongoing commitment to giving voice to the people of the Northwest Corridor,” said Ronald L. Carter, president of Johnson C. Smith University. “Our results will help future leaders focus on matters that affect the quality of life, build up our assets as we work together to create a vibrant community.”
