Statement from Dr. Ronald L. Carter, President of Johnson C. Smith University, on the death of former South Africa President Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela

We at Johnson C. Smith University are deeply saddened by the death of former President Nelson Mandela. The great life he led has inspired all who are oppressed, deprived of their freedoms and denied their rights as human beings.  His life’s work will stand as an example for people around the world who are committed to social justice, social change and affirming the human dignity of every individual. His legacy of moral courage is so great that it will live beyond the boundaries of time and place.

Mr. Mandela will remain immortal as a passionate leader and teacher who never settled for that which was, but fought fearlessly to help mold the world around him to be more as he knew it could be.  Although he was a citizen of South Africa, the global community has lost one of its most powerful statesmen, who exemplified the glory of living in adversity and in triumph.

He once said “The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” Mr. Mandela’s words will forever lift us up and give us the courage to rise and to climb.

I extend my deepest condolences to the Mandela family. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time as we mourn the death and celebrate the life of their beloved father, grandfather and husband.
