National Association of Black Journalists to Meet at JCSU
Charlotte, NC – March 7, 2013 - The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), Region III will have its conference on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University on Saturday, March 9. Region III includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The conference theme is “Unplugged: Wireless in a Hi-Tech World.” Broadcast and print journalists, as well as student journalists, from the Southeast will attend the conference. Workshops will begin in Grimes Lounge on the JCSU campus at 8 a.m. A tribute to NABJ founders will be included in the morning session in Grimes Lounge. Later, conference participants will convene in the Humanities Building for workshops. Professional journalists will be available to offer critiques of students’ works.
The Johnson C. Smith Department of Visual, Performing and Communication Arts serves as one of the major sponsors of the event. Other sponsors include Raycom Media, WRAL Channel 5 in Raleigh, WSOC-TV in Charlotte, Wells Fargo, Belk, Radio Television Digital News Association, Gannett, Capitol Broadcasting Company, Inc., Time Warner Cable and Bahakel Communications.
This year, NABJ Region III will recognize a legendary black journalist who has made outstanding contributions to the media industry in Region III. In addition the organization will present a scholarship to a student enrolled in college in Region III.
Dedrick Russell, a WBTV, LLC/Raycom Media reporter, serves as NABJ Region III director and program chair of the conference.
