Johnson C. Smith University professor shares expertise on Cape Verdean music and culture with Oxford University Press

Charlotte, N.C., - Dec. 11, 2012 – An article by Terza Lima-Neves, assistant professor of political science at Johnson C. Smith University, describing the African traditional music of Cape Verde was recently published by Oxford University Press.

Lima-Neves is a contributing writer to the Oxford Dictionary of African Biography, edited by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, which offers a comprehensive summary of the lives of Africans who shaped its history.

In the article, Lima-Neves further articulates the diverse, lively, and what is slowly becoming the rebirth of the traditional music scene in Cape Verde. “It may be too early to predict whether or not Cape Verdean traditional music is destined for greatness in the hands of a younger generation,” said Lima-Neves. “But it is safe to say that this developing African nation and its diaspora community continue to produce exceptionally talented musicians who bring joy to the ears of music fans throughout the world.” 

Lima-Neves is managing editor for FORCV.com, an online Cape Verdean newspaper that serves the Cape Verdean diaspora worldwide. In addition, she writes articles for FORCV.com on political and social matters related to the Cape Verdean community.

Born and raised on the Cape Verde Islands, Lima-Neves teaches courses on African, international, comparative and gender politics. She holds a Doctor of Philosophy in political science from Clark Atlanta University where her research focused on African politics, comparative politics, international politics and political theory.
