Johnson C. Smith University Team Wins River Roar College Division
Charlotte, N.C. 2012, June 14, 2012 – Johnson C. Smith University helped to promote athletic programs in Charlotte by participating in the annual River Roar on June 8 to support the Charlotte Sports Commission. The university’s silver sponsorship included an opportunity to register a rafting team in the event. This year’s JCSU team placed first in the college division against the UNC-Charlotte 49ers and Johnson and Wales University.
“The event not only promotes area charities serving youth, but also is a great way to build camaraderie,” said JCSU team member William Watkins. He organized a team of six paddlers who raced down the competition channel of the National White Water Center.
Athletic Director Steve Joyner, who represents Johnson C. Smith University on the commission’s board of directors, has ensured the university’s representation in the River Roar event for the past five years.
The Charlotte Sports Commission, was established in 1994 to impact the region through sports.
