Johnson C. Smith University Students Prepare High School Students for College Success

Charlotte, N.C. (Nov. 29, 2012) – Partnering with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, Johnson C. Smith University hosted the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) day Oct. 20, for more than 20 students from Charlotte Mecklenburg high schools. University students in an educational psychology class planned and organized the event to help the participants gain insight into college life.

The AVID initiative, an in-school academic support program, helps foster college eligibility and success among high school students. The students attended sessions at JCSU where they were able to learn about the college admissions process, goal setting, financial aid and student life. They were also given a campus tour.  “The event was a great opportunity for high school students to ask one-on-one questions to Johnson C. Smith University students about the college life in general,” said Ruth Greene professor of psychology.

“What I learned from JCSU AVID Day is that if you apply yourself and manage your time right you will succeed,” said Tatiana Webb, a senior at West Mecklenburg High School. Altogether, 27 AVID programs are offered in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, six of which are high schools. For more information visit:
