JCSU Alumni Inspire Youth Through Smart Art Project
Charlotte, N.C., February 27, 2013 – Sound Decisions RDS Inc., a nonprofit organization created by Johnson C. Smith University alumni Oscar and Kiya Frazier, recently received a Smart Art: Graffiti Prevention Mural Grant from Keep Charlotte Beautiful. The grant was used to create a mural depicting famous North Carolinians, while encouraging youth to take pride in their community and prevent graffiti.
Keep Charlotte Beautiful provides funding each year for a community mural project with the goal of reducing and preventing graffiti. Sound Decisions partnered with First Ward Creative Arts Academy on the mural in their new Sense and Science Garden. On Jan. 26, students from First Ward Elementary school, parents, community members and student volunteers from Johnson C. Smith University combined their talents to paint the mural during their community day. “Having the students involved in painting the mural gives them a sense of ownership and pride in their school and community,” said Oscar Frazier, founder of Sound Decisions RDS, Inc.
The mural was completed on Feb. 16 and an unveiling ceremony is planned for this spring. The project was captured on video and can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FztoofD3EY&feature=youtube_gdata_player.
Sound Decisions RDS Inc. provides mentorship and advocacy to local youth through exposure to the arts and community projects. Offering various services and creative programs, the organization seeks to help youth make sound decisions. Besides the mural project, Sound Decisions RDS, Inc. has also partnered with Ranson IB Middle School to offer a six-session program that will teach art enrichment and financial literacy classes to youth and young adults.
