Charlotte, N.C. Nov. 20, 2012 -- On October 26, Johnson C. Smith University officially opened HealthPlex, a new facility designed to promote health and wellness on campus and in the community. Located next to Jack S. Brayboy Gymnasium, the 5,600-square-foot facility houses the university’s Applied Health Research Center and Wellness Department.

“The primary focus of the HealthPlex is to provide health and wellness services that promote positive attitudes, healthily lifestyles and responsible self-care for the JCSU campus and surrounding community through applied research in health, human performance and sport,” said Victor Romano, Wellness Director. Romano has earned certifications in personal training, strength and conditioning, corrective exercise and primary group exercise instruction. He has more than 10 years of experience in the field of exercise science and his research has been published by the National Scholastic Sports Foundation.

JCSU collaborated with Charlotte city officials and various corporate partners on the construction of the new facility, which is now open free to the campus, as well as to the community on a medical referral only basis, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Preventative wellness programming, such as weight management, health coaching, healthy living seminar series and healthy cooking demonstrations will be offered free of cost on campus and within the community beginning in January 2013.
