Charlotte, N.C. (October 27, 2012) – The Johnson C Smith University football team set some historic marks with their 27-21 Homecoming victory over Saint Augustine’s University on Saturday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Complex. JCSU improves to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in CIAA, while St. Augustine’s drops to 5-4 overall and 3-3 in conference. The Golden Bulls have won three consecutive games for the first time since the 2006 season.

The Falcons struck first on the scoreboard with a 16 yard pass from Teddy Bacote to Tyron Laughinghouse. JCSU answered on the next drive with a 21 yard touchdown reception from sophomore quarterback Keahn Wallace (Homestead, FL) to senior receiver Matthew Jeffries (Gainesville, GA). The first quarter came to a close with the score tied up at seven apiece.

Wallace connected again with Jeffries in the second quarter to move the Golden Bulls ahead. Jeffries caught a 20 yard TD pass to cap a 13 play, 75 yard drive. The score put JCSU up 14-7 with 6:40 left in the first half. The score remained the same until halftime.

After the break, Wallace and Jeffries hooked up for their third touchdown of the day. This time Jeffries reeled in a 23 yard TD catch. Junior place kicker Alfred Ntiamoah (Los Angeles, CA) misfired on the extra point, so the Golden Bulls led 20-7.

The Falcons eventually responded with a scoring drive towards the end of the third. Phillip English had a five yard dash into the end zone to draw Saint Augustine’s within one possession (20-14). Before the third concluded, the Golden Bulls put more points on the board. Wallace found senior tailback Dedrick Anderson (Winston-Salem, NC) on a screen pass that went 52 yard to the house.

Anderson cut from the left side of the field up the middle to increase the JCSU advantage to 27-14.

Sophomore linebacker Anthony Allen (Lithonia, GA) ended the Falcons offensive drive in the fourth quarter with his first career interception. Junior wide receiver Terrell Hutchinson (Chester, SC) was the recipient of a long center field pass from Wallace. Hutchinson gained 30 yards and a JCSU first down. The Golden Bulls eventually had to punt.

Senior defensive end Derrick Johnson II (Charlotte, NC) and junior defensive tackle Darius Robinson (Lancaster, SC) sandwiched Bacote for a sack with 7:40 left in regulation.

With less than two minutes left to play Laughinghouse made an acrobatic TD catch between two defenders. The score closed the gap for the Falcons to 27-21 with 1:48 left in regulation. SAU attempted an on-side kick which was recovered by Allen to seal the win.

Wallace completed 16-of-27 passes for 316 yards, four touchdowns, and no turnovers. He eclipsed his single-season passing total set last year. Wallace is second all-time for most passing yards in a season with 2,057. He is 72 yards away from becoming the school leader.

Jeffries had a career and record-setting day with his performance. He caught eight passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns. It was his first 100 plus yard game of the season. Jeffries’ 170 yards receiving sets a career and a JCSU single-game record. His three touchdown catches were also a career-high.

JCSU will close the regular season next weekend in the 2012 Commemorative Classic against longtime rival Livingstone College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Irwin Belk Complex. The Golden Bulls could potentially finish with back to back winning season for the first time since 1972-73.
