Founders’ Day Convocation at Johnson C. Smith Honors Astrid Chirinos
Charlotte, N.C. (April 21, 2013) – Johnson C. Smith University honored Astrid Chirinos, president of the Latin American Chamber of Commerce of Charlotte, (LACCC) with the Presidential Award of Distinction during its 146th Founders’ Day Convocation on April 21. The event held at the Jane M. Smith Memorial Church recognized the graduating Class of 2013 which includes the charter class of Metropolitan College for adult students.
Chirinos was recognized for her accomplishments in business and diversity. She has worked with multicultural marketing and multicultural workplace strategies for Diverso Global Strategies. As president of the LACCC for the past 17 years, she has promoted the economic development, growth, sustainability and success of the Latino business community in the Charlotte Region. Much of her work began on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University.
Convocation also featured keynote speaker Nat Irvin, professor of management at the University of Louisville College of Business. He is a former commentator for NPR’s “Weekend Edition” and a regular roundtable participant on NPR’s “News and Notes.” Currently, he is the voice of the “N2 the Future,” educational program on Syndication One radio and founder of Thrivals 3.0 @IdeaFestival, launched in 2010.
The University will hold its commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 19 at 8 a.m. at Irwin Belk Stadium. Ambassador Andrew Young will deliver the address.
