Open Letter to Leford Green
July 22, 2012
I must first congratulate you on your significant achievement of qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. You have previously competed at the World Championships in Athletics and now you have qualified to compete on the greatest stage in athletics. The road has been filled with challenges, setbacks, triumphs and joy. None was more fulfilling than becoming the three-time Jamaican national champion in the 400m hurdles and to earn your spot at the 2012 London Summer Olympics.
As you travel to Europe, enjoy the new experiences that you will encounter and utilize the new opportunities for networking and growth. Learn from the lessons of last year’s World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. Learn from the lessons of early season setbacks that threatened your 2012 season.
Continue to rehearse the technical details that we have covered and the parts of your race that are critical for you to achieve your goal. Have a singular focus to be the best you can be on August 3rd, 4th and 6th 2012, the days of the 400m hurdles.
You are the second male Olympian from Johnson C. Smith University. As you take the baton from Vincent Mathews; now execute your leg of the Smith relay with pride and glory. Know you are an ambassador to your country and our noble institution (JCSU); which sits on the highest point in Charlotte, NC. Represent your country, the University, your sponsors and yourself with honor and dignity. I pray God’s blessing on all you are about to do and will welcome you back to Charlotte when you return.
