Bury the Bears

Each year during Homecoming Week, the opposing football team is declared the enemy. On Oct. 21, Johnson C. Smith University held “Bury the Bears” a mock funeral in Biddle Hall. The tongue-in-cheek event kicked off weeklong activities leading up to the big Homecoming game.

A bear costume laid in a casket as a stand-in for Shaw University’s bear mascot. As part of the program, a student delivered a eulogy, other students gave facetious tributes, and still others were crying “family members” for the Shaw bear. A choir sang to console the “family” and lift up hope that the JCSU Golden Bulls would defeat the Bears on the football field.
