The Importance of Scholarships

Scholarships can make the difference in whether a student not only attends college, but also whether the student remains in college. Nurturing a student’s talents and career ambitions can be rewarding, and one way to help nurture students at Johnson C. Smith University is by contributing to our scholarship funds.

Whether an individual, family, faculty member or alumni group, you can create a student scholarship or give to an existing scholarship fund. Your gift immediately improves the lives of students. A scholarship encourages academic excellence and perseverance. Plus, gifts like yours help Johnson C. Smith University remain one of the top-ranked schools in the Carolinas – allowing us to attract the best and brightest to campus.

Endowed Scholarships

For our list of Endowed Scholarships, click here

An endowment fund protects the principal gift and uses only a portion of the interest earned each year to provide scholarship support. Since the principal remains intact, donors can ensure that their memory or that of a loved one will continue forever. Your commitment to endow a scholarship will positively impact JCSU and its students for generations to come.

Each endowment begins with an initial gift and is permanently endowed when the fund reaches $25,000. Full endowment must occur within a five-year period, and no awards are made to students until the $25,000 minimum level is attained. Once the scholarship is fully endowed, a percentage of earnings is awarded each year, while the principal is preserved and grows so that the scholarship will be awarded in perpetuity.

Establishing an endowed scholarship is one of the most enduring and meaningful ways an individual or organization can make a difference in the lives of JCSU students. As the scholarship benefactor, you may determine the general criteria by which recipients are selected including department of study, year in school, academic merit or financial need. Scholarships can be named after the donor(s), in memory of a dear friend or family member, in honor of an organization, and any other way the donor wishes.

Annually-Funded Scholarships

Annually-funded scholarships, which require a gift from the donor each year, are also critical as JCSU strives to offer students a quality education. With an annual gift of $1,000 or more, a donor may establish an annually-funded scholarship in their name or in honor of a loved one. The awarding of these scholarships is based primarily on need.

Your Scholarship Gift Is…

... An investment in a young person’s future, enabling talented and deserving students to gain the distinctive, lifelong benefits of a JCSU education.

…An investment in society’s future, because at JCSU, our graduates acquire the combination of knowledge, abilities, outlook and values that will be required of tomorrow’s leaders.

…An investment in the university’s future, helping us keep JCSU affordable for upcoming generations of students without sacrificing our traditional high level of quality in instruction and academic programs.

…Enduring, because endowment provides an inexhaustible source of funding for future scholarship awards.

…Personally rewarding, through opportunities to name your award in honor or memory of someone and to build a connection with student recipients.

Additional Considerations

Whether your gift creates an endowed or an annually-funded scholarship, you’re making an investment in the future of JCSU and its students. We appreciate your interest in making such an investment and look forward to answering any questions you may have.
