John A. Allison IV
John A. Allison IV is chairman and chief executive officer of BB&T Corporation, a 105-billion-dollar financial-holding company. Allison began his service with BB&T in 1971 and has managed a wide variety of responsibilities throughout the bank. He became president of BB&T in 1987 and was elected chairman and CEO in July 1989.
Allison is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in 1971. He received his master’s degree in management from Duke University in 1974. He is also a graduate of the American Bankers Association Stonier Graduate School of Banking and received honorary doctorate degrees from Clemson University in 2005, Mount Olive College in 2002 and East Carolina University in 1995.
He is a member of the American Bankers Association and The Financial Services Roundtable. He serves on the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center board of visitors, the board of visitors for Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business and the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is also a member of the boards of directors of The Financial Clearing House, Independent College Fund and the Global TransPark Foundation.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Allison is married to the former Elizabeth McDonald of Elkin, N.C. They have two sons and one daughter — Eric, William and Sarah.
