Inaugural Members of 1867
Giving Societies Inducted at 2005 Homecoming Gala
Some arrived from South Carolina and
Washington D.C.; others came from Philadelphia and various points
across North Carolina. Regardless of where their journey began,
their destination was the same – the Johnson C. Smith University’s
National Alumni Association’s Homecoming Gala on October 28, 2005 in
Charlotte. Their common purpose for attending: to be inducted into
the most prestigious philanthropy group at JCSU, the 1867 Giving
Societies.
Newly established, the 1867 Giving
Societies is comprised of six giving society levels that honor
cumulative gifts by donors since 2000. The 1867 Giving Societies
honor the beginning of JCSU, one of the nation’s oldest and
strongest Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
At the induction, members were
presented with specially commissioned medallions cast in metal.
Inductees of the Golden Bull Society and the Duke Society received
gold medallions, while Myers Society members received silver and
Sanders Society received bronze.
The Induction Ceremony for the 1867
Giving Societies is held annually during JCSU Homecoming.
Comments from 2005 Inductees:
Mrs. Shirley M. Greene, Class of 1969,
said “It was very flattering to have a reward for contributing to
JCSU. It made me very proud of the University.” Mrs. Greene met
her husband, James (Bull) L. Greene, Class of 1967, when they
were both students at JCSU.
Ms. Christy Bryant, Class of 1975,
said her induction into the 1867 Giving Societies’ Sanders Society
has challenged her to increase her giving so that she can join some
of her friends at another giving level. “I consider it a real
honor to be inducted. JCSU is very dear to my heart.”
Mr. Sidney Glee, Class of 1963, said
“It meant a lot that Johnson C. Smith University would recognize
people who give significantly to support the University. My late
wife, Lydia Smalls Glee, and I were both first generation college
students. We would not have made it if someone had not helped us.
Anything I can do to help other students, I certainly will do.”
