influential donor, Mrs. Johnson C. Smith, whose gift in honor of her
husband in 1921 changed the course and the name of the University.
The Biddle
Society

In honor of Major Henry Jonathon Biddle,
whose wife made a gift of $1,900 to honor his fight for the Union
and human freedom. Mrs. Biddle pledged her support when she learned
of an institution devoted to evangelizing and educating the
Freedmen.

In honor of the University’s mascot, the
Golden Bull, the embodiment of pride, spirit, and association to
Johnson C. Smith University.
The Duke Society

In honor of the generous benefactor,
James B. Duke, a successful Charlotte industrialist who included
Johnson C. Smith University in The Duke Endowment in 1924, thus
committing in excess of $60 million in gifts to date.

In honor of Colonel William R. Myers,
who in 1869, made a gift of eight acres of land for a permanent site
for the then infant Biddle Memorial Institute.
