Valerie Black has an extensive background in broadcast journalism. As a teenager, Valerie began working as a production assistant at an ABC affiliate in the Myrtle Beach/Florence, S.C. television market. A year later, she moved over to the CBS affiliate, WBTW News 13, where she worked as a production and newsroom assistant and video editor during college. During her senior year of college, Valerie began to focus more on newswriting and became an associate producer at WTKR Newschannel 3 in Norfolk, Va.

After graduating with honors from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia in 2002, Valerie was called back to work at WBTW News 13 as the 5:00 p.m. show producer. This is where she gained her experience implementing convergence with a local newspaper. She is credited with increasing ratings with her show and co-creating a 30-minute primetime health show called Count On Health.

During Valerie's time as a producer, she went back to obtain her Master's degree so she could combine her career with her passion for teaching. Valerie has taught at colleges in Florence and Columbia, S.C. prior to joining Johnson C. Smith University.
