An old residence hall on campus is getting an energy-efficient facelift, thanks to Duke Energy’s Smart Building Advantage (SBA) program. Duke Hall was built in 1940 and is one of many historical buildings on campus that was built to last. The SBA program has provided incentives that will bring the three-story building into the 21st century, giving it new life as a contemporary residence hall that meets the most current environmental standards.
The renovated building will have 36 residential suites housing 70 students. Each suite will have its own bath and shower with plumbing fixtures to reduce energy and water consumption. Duke Hall will also have common areas with a campus community room, laundry rooms and syndicate rooms for studying and small meetings. All areas will have high-efficiency lighting for additional energy savings.
To further support the University’s sustainability efforts, the Duke Hall project will pursue LEED for Homes certification, with a target rating of “silver.” The current structure will be “recycled,” with the embodied energy that went into its construction remaining and new systems installed that allow the building to perform more efficiently. An efficient four-pipe mechanical system, for example, will connect the building to the future central plant that has been proposed for the JCSU campus.
Construction is scheduled to start in early July 2012, with estimated completion in April 2013.
