Mentor Program
The Upward Bound Mentoring Program (Upward Bound Ambassadors) is
designed to assist potential first generation and/or modest-income
students with the skills and motivation necessary for high school
completion and entrance into a post-secondary institution.
Mentors are selected from qualified applicants who attend Johnson
C. Smith University and successfully complete an interview with
staff. Each mentor receives monthly training to facilitate the
process of establishing a supportive and purposeful relationship
with parents and the mentee. The primary role of the mentor is to
provide guidance and encouragement to the program participants.
With constructive intervention, hopefully the participants will
realize the importance of achieving, reaching gals and continuing
their education.
Expectations: The
mentor will make at least one contact with their mentee per week.
Contact will be made in person (preferably) or by phone in some
instances. The nature of this contact is for the mentor to
familiarize him/herself with the needs of the mentee and to
encourage the mentee to participate in extracurricular activities
agreed on by the mentor, mentee and parents. The Program
Counselors render supervision of the mentoring component to ensure
compliance with the programs’ mission and purpose.
