Peer Educators
What Is The Purpose of S.W.A.R.M?
The purpose of the JCSU S.W.A.R.M. Peer Educators is to be a
positive health influence, provide information and conduct
activities for JCSU students and the local community with a
specific emphasis on alcohol and drug use/abuse, safer sex
including HIV/AIDS, Violence Against Women Prevention and
other health related issues.
How Can I Become A Member of S.W.A.R.M.
Students who are enrolled at Johnson C. Smith University are
eligible for membership. Interested students must have a
minimum of 2.0 GPA, complete an application, attend an
interview at the Counseling and Testing Center and make a
one-year commitment of service. Applications will be taken
on a rolling basis.
What Is Required Of Club Members?
- Attendance at the biweekly meetings
- Completion of S.W.A.R.M Commitments
(chosen by each individual member)
- Willingness to be a healthy role model to other
students and members of the community
- Willingness to help create bulletin boards and
health fair displays
- Participation in semi-annual trainings
Want to Schedule a Workshop for a Club, Organization,
Residence Hall and/or Group of Friends?
The JCSU S.W.A.R.M. Peer Educators and the advisors
are available for workshops or presentations and/or helping
you plan and or present a workshop. We can also help you
locate speakers in the community. We have numerous handouts,
videos and activities that can be tailored to any setting.
We are available for programs during and after regular
business hours.
How Soon Should I Schedule My Program?
The Peer Educators require two weeks notice for program
requests. However, exceptions will be made for special
occasions.
Possible Program Topics
Programs can be presented on most topic areas dealing with
various health behaviors (alcohol use, risky sexual
behaviors, tobacco use). However, we specialize in
programming around the following topic areas:
- Sexually Transmitted Disease Prevention
- HIV/AIDS
- Violence Prevention
- Sexual Assault
- Domestic Violence
- Stalking
- Alcohol and Drug Use/Abuse
