Adding Network Printers to PC's Using Windows XP
 
  • To install a network specific printer on a computer, do the following.

    • Click Start and then click Printers  and Faxes.

     

 

   
  • Click Add Printer. You should see the following screen shot for Welcome to the Add Printer Wizard.

 

   
  • Click Next

 

 

   

 

 

  • Select either Local or Network print.
    • A networkprinter is a printer that does not have to be connected to a particular computer in order to printer.
    • A Local printer is a printer connected directly to the machine.
      • If you select Local printer:
      • Click Next.
      • If the printeris a local printer you will need to search the manufacture web site, use a cd, or diskette to install the drivers for a printer. (See the next section of this document.)
    • If you select Network Printer, click Next to Specify a Printer from the network.
   

  • Scroll through the servers to find MSW2kPRT.
 
   
  • Double click MSW2kPRT
 
   
  • Scroll through the list to find the printer that you need to install.
 

 

 

  • Select the needed printer and then click Next.

 

  • Answer this question Yes or No, depending on whether or not this is the default printer.
  • Click Next.
   
  • The printer should show in the Printer and Faxes dialog box. The printer should show in the Printer and Faxes dialog box. Note that there is a check mark on the default printer.

  • Click Finish on the Completing the Add Printer Wizard.

 

   
Adding Network Printers to PC's Using Windows 2000

Objectives:

  • Install a networkspecific printeronto a desktop machine.

  • To illustrate the different ways of add print drivers to PC’s when installing stand-alone printers.

  • To instruct on how to add a network printerdriver locally to a cpu.

To install a network specific printer onto a desktop machine, do the following:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.

  2. Click Add Printer.

  3. Click Next.

  4. Select either Local or Network print. A network printer is a printer that does not have to be connected to a particular computer in order to printer. A Local printer is a printer connected directly to the machine.

    1. If you select Local printer:

                                                               i.      Click Next.

                                                             ii.      If the printeris a local printer you will need to search the manufacture web site, use a cd, or diskette to install the drivers for a printer. (See the next section of this document.)

    1. If you select Network Printer, click Next twice to Browse for the network printer driver:

   

   
  • Scroll down the list until you find MSW2KPRT
  • Double click the MSW2KPRT item.

   
    1. Scroll down through the MSW2KPRT list to find the printer  driver that you are trying to install and select it:
   

   
    1. Click Next.
    2. Answer Yes or No as to whether this printer  is the default printer, and then click Next.
    3. Click Finish.
   

   

To illustrate the different ways of add print drivers to PC’s when installing printers.

* There are two different ways to add new printer drivers to PC’s *

1.      Installing printer drivers from a CD accompanying the printer

a.       Insert the CD into the CD ROM drive; this should initiate a wizard that will allow you to follow the appropriate steps to install the driver.

b.      If the steps are completed properly, then you have added a printer driver.

2.      Installing printer drivers from the Internet for an NT computer.

a.       Whatever the make of the printer, go to that specific website. (Ex. Lexmark, Cannon, etc.)

b.      Locate the exact printer driver software for the particular printer you need to install.

c.       To download all of the printer’s software files to a disk or to the Hard Drive in the Save as window, select Desktop as the location to save the download.

d.      Close the dialog box when the download is completed.

e.       Install the printerdriver software.

f.        Click Start, point to Settings, and then Click Printers.

g.       Double-Click Add Printer.

Select My Computer and click then click Next.
 






 

i.     Select a LPT port (LPT1 is a common choice).
 

 

j.       Click Have Disk

1)     NOTE: If you get a dialog box that reads, "A:\ is not accessible, the device is not ready," click Cancel.

k.     Use the drop-down menus to find and select the directory containing the print driver files.

l.     Select one of the types of drivers that you want to use (ex. If you were installing the
driver for HP LaserJet 8100 printer
, you would choose “hp8100p5”).

m.      Click Open, and then click OK.

n.     Click Next and then follow the directions for loading the driver.

o.     Once the driver is installed, it will put an icon for the driver in the Printers dialog box.

3.     Installing printerdrivers from the Internet for a W2000 computer.

a.       Whatever the make of the printer, go to that specific website. (Ex. Lexmark, Cannon, etc.)

b.      Locate the exact printer driver software for the particular printer you need to install.

c.     To download all of the printer’s software files to a disk or to the Hard Drive in the Save as window, select Desktop as the location to save the download.

d.      Close the dialog box when the download is completed.

e.       Install the printerdriver software.

f.        Click Start, point to Settings, and then Click Printers.

g.       Double-Click Add Printer.

h.       Click Next.

i.         Select Local printer, click Next, and then click Finish.

j.        Click Have Disk

k.      Use the drop-down menus to find and select the directory containing the print driver files.

l.      Select one of the types of drivers that you want to use (ex. If you were installing

n.       Click Next and then follow the directions for loading the driver.

o.    Once the driver is installed, it will put an icon for the driver in the Printers dialog box.

Adding A Local Printer to a Windows 2000 Computer

To add a printer locally to a computer, do the following:

  1. NOTE: You will need to know the network path to the printer driver before doing the rest of these steps.
  2. Sign on locally as Administrator.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, and then select Printers.
  4. Click Add Printer.
  5. Click My Computer and then select Add Port.
  6. Click Local Port and then select New Port.
  7. Type the networkprinterlocation (\\msmt2\x340DEV1).
  8. Click OK, Close, and then Next.
  9. Click Have Disk and then type the network location for the driver of the printer  that you are installing: (\\msnt\clients\xerox\340st\nt).
  10. Click OK, Next, and then select Keep the Existing Driver.
  11. Click Next and enter a Name for the printer.
  12. Click Next and Not Shared.
  13. Right click the printerand select Document Defaults.
  14. Click the Document Options tab and Uncheck “Request Banner Sheet.”
  15. Click the Font tab and under True Type Fonts, select Always Send to Printer.
  16. Click the System Configuration tab and click everything except Mailbox and Envelope Tray.
  17. Click OK.
