Camillya Massunda of Charlotte, is a political science major who received a scholarship to Keller Graduate School of Management at DeVry University and began classes there the day after graduation. A graduate of Vance High School, Camillya is the first in her immediate family to graduate from a four-year university. Her ultimate career goal is to become an entrepreneur and open a spa for girls. During college, she managed special events and had internships with the DNC, Obama Campaign, Malcolm Graham and the Wadsworth Foundation. She also worked for several nonprofits in Charlotte including the Dreams mentoring program for teenagers; Communities in Schools and Unity Drive 2014 for the CIAA.
Much of her inspiration comes from her daughter, who was born when Camillya was only 15. From that experience she learned about relying on mentors such as her high school principal and teachers. Her mother has been a tremendous source of support and inspiration.
Camillya’s college career started at Bennett College. When her Mother tore her meniscus, Camillya had to leave Bennett and transfer to CPCC, where she earned credentials in child care. Her daughter is now age 11 and is a great motivator as well as an A student. She has received a scholarship to attend Trinity Episcopal.
