1. What distinguishes Johnson C. Smith University from other universities?
  • JCSU’s state-of-the-art Technology Center - You will receive a laptop computer and have access to the
    campus-wide network and wireless internet services.
  • The Learning Communities at JCSU create a positive, intellectually energized atmosphere for your academic development.
  • The Center for Freshman through Senior Year Experience provides hands-on services to address both academic and social adjustment needs of student’s.
  • JCSU’s three colleges, the college of Arts and Sciences, the College of Professional Students and the Honors College, and its academic units the University offers 27 majors and confers three degrees, the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and the Bachelor of Social Work.
  • Liberal Studies program provides you with the opportunities to develop yourself intellectually, socially, physically, creatively and ethically.
  • JCSU’s graduation rates remain one of the highest in the nation for a Division II institution.

3. When is the application deadline?
There is no deadline at Johnson C. Smith University we are on a rolling admission. We will continue to accept applications until the day of the drop/add period. Please refer to our Academic Calendar for important dates.

4. Does Johnson C. Smith University allow students who only have a GED to apply?
Yes, it is possible for students who completed high school with a GED to be admitted to Johnson C. Smith University. However, such students will still need to meet all other standardized test requirements and must also provide official transcripts of all high school coursework they attempted, in addition to providing an official copy of their GED.

Yes, the office of admission provides academic scholarships to incoming freshman students. Refer to our Scholarships page for more information.

Yes it is; therefore there are no in-state or out-of-state fees.

9. Are freshmen required to live on campus?
Yes, however if you live in Charlotte, N.C. then it is optional.

10. Where do freshmen live?
Freshmen live in the freshmen dormitory. Female dorms are called The James B. Duke Memorial Hall, Sanders Hall, and Myers Hall and the male dorm is called Liston Hall. For more information regarding living arrangements, click here.

11. What types of student organizations are on campus?
Johnson C. Smith University has over 100 student organizations (.pdf) to choose from – offering something for every interest and a place for every person!

12. What types of athletic and intramural activities are available?
The Johnson C. Smith University athletics department has launched a new athletics website. www.goldenbullsports.com. From now on, all information related to JCSU athletics can be found at that location.

13. What are the opportunities for service learning on campus? What percentage of students
participates in community service?

All students must complete as least 40 hours of community service in order graduate.

14. What are the on-campus dining options? Are there flexible meal plans?
There are currently four different meal plans available for on campus students. Please refer to our tuition and fees section for detailed information.

15. Am I allowed to bring a car to Johnson C. Smith University?
Freshmen are not allowed to have cars their first year on campus.

16. What division is Johnson C. Smith University in sports?
Johnson C. Smith University is Division 2 in the CIAA.

17. Does Johnson C. Smith University offer early decision or early action admission?
Johnson C. Smith University offers Project Early Start designated to Charlotte area high school seniors. Selected students must complete appropriate forms, provide an official high school transcript, have a minimum GPA of 3.25, have an SAT score of at least 1000 (a PSAT score of at least 1000 or an ACT score of at least 20), provide two letters of recommendation from teachers, and receive parental consent.

18. Does Johnson C. Smith University offer summer programs for high school students?
Yes, we have a Freshman Summer Scholar Program available for our accepted students. For more information, please give the Office of Admissions a call (see below).
