C.O.R.E. is a National Science Foundation funded program
seeking to enhance the quality of students
in the fields of science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics.
C.O.R.E. seeks to enhance the quality and increase the
retention rate of undergraduate science, technology, engineering,
and mathematics (STEM) students as a means to broaden
participation in the Global STEM workforce. Through learning
communities and experiential education, students become aware of,
and will be prepared for graduate school matriculation.
C.O.R.E. works towards its goal by enabling Johnson C.
Smith University and its students:
- To develop and maintain a diverse and intellectually
vigorous faculty and student partnership committed to the
improvement of undergraduate education
- To strengthen STEM curricula, courses, and
laboratories through the incorporation of advances in science
and engineering knowledge and research-based teaching and
learning
- To provide mentor-supervised research experiences that
complement their academic programs
Historically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate
Program (HBCU-UP)
HBCU-UP is one the National Science Foundation's programs
designed to make progress toward the Foundation's People Goal; "A
diverse, competitive and globally engaged U.S. workforce of
scientists, engineers, technologists and well prepared citizens."

- Research opportunities for undergraduate students on
campus or off site
- Tutorial services-peer, faculty, and professional
- Mentoring Programs
- Increased access to computer labs and STEM equipment
- Travel for presentations at research conferences
- Career information
- Graduate School planning and preparation-test taking
courses, application preparation, funding opportunities,
and financial aid information
