The Social Work
Club was formed in October 1992. However, part of its
history dates back to 1973 when social work existed as a
“Concentration” under the auspices of the Department of
Sociology. Initially, it was named SSHARE (Smith Students
Having a Rich Experience). Then, in 1975, it was renamed to more
clearly identify the majors involved. It became the
Sociology/Social Welfare Club and was connected with that name
until 1992.
The purposes of the organization are
to foster a close relationship between the students and faculty
in the Social Work Program; to exchange knowledge and acquire a
deeper understanding of social welfare and conflicting goals
that are obstructive in meeting the needs of people, in general,
and women and minorities, in particular; and, to plan and carry
out service projects on the campus and in the community.
All students are
eligible for membership in the club who are majors or have an
interest in majoring in social work. However, only those
students who have completed at least one course in social work
and are in good standing academically can hold offices. |
