The Health and Human Performance
Department is home to three special programs: HOPE Program,
Project Commit to Prevent, and our Service Learning partnership.
The HOPE
program (HIV/AIDS Orientation and Professional Education) is an
initiative of the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), in
collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention’s (CDC) Division of Adolescent School Health (DASH)
to address the growing rates of HIV infection among African
American Youth. The program is designed to enhance and
strengthen campus HIV education curricular activities by working
with faculty who are preparing African American health
professionals and pre-service teachers who will have the most
contact with the target audience.
Project Commit
to Prevent is an initiative of the North Carolina HIV/STD
Prevention and Care Branch of the Division of Public Health. Its
goal is to empower college/university students, with special
emphasis on African Americans and American Indians, to change
behaviors that put them at risk for HIV and other sexually
transmitted infections.
Our Service
Learning partnership is with the JCSU Peer Educators known as
SWARM (Students With A Realistic Mission), housed in the
Counseling and Testing Center. Its goal is to enhance the
curriculum in our two Service Learning courses (HED 224:
Healthful Living and HED 235: Drugs and Drug Education) by
training students to be Peer Educators. Each of these programs
include expanding the HIV/STD educational and risk reduction
programs on campus. If you would like to get involved, please
contact Dr. Karen Butler for more information.
