The Department of
Education offers a major in elementary education leading to the
Bachelor of Arts degree and teacher licensure. The Bachelor's
degree with teacher licensure at the secondary level may be
earned in Mathematics, Social Studies, and English. The
Bachelor's degree with teacher licensure in special areas at the
K-12 level may be earned in Health and Physical Education.
While teacher
education at Johnson C. Smith University is viewed as a
university-wide function, the Department of Education assumes
major responsibility for coordinating all programs. Composed of
the Vice President for Academic Affairs and
representatives from the various academic disciplines at JCSU
and our public school partners, the Teacher Education Committee
formulates specific as well as broad policies that pertain to
the best interests of the Teacher Education Program at the
University. It also recommends such to the Educational Policies
Committee. All Teacher Education Programs at JCSU have
appropriate approval of the North Carolina Department of Public
Instruction. The Department of Education is accredited by the
National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education
(NCATE).
