The Sophomore
Experience is Phase II of the Honors College Curriculum. It
focuses on Involvement and the Breadth of Learning.
(Acceptance into
this phase requires a GPA of 3.0, completion of the Plan of Study,
written application, and interview with Dean, recommendation by
Dean in concurrence with the Honors College Faculty.)
NOTE: The
Honors Induction is open to all qualified students (i.e.
transfers, AFS Freshmen, and traditional Freshmen and Sophomores).
Sophomores can make application to live in Honors College Center.
A GPA of 3.0, application and interview with the selection
committee is required for consideration.
Requirements for
the year:
A.
Six Honors College Courses (18
credits); emphasis on exposure to new disciplines.
NOTE: It is
expected that all Sophomores will take at least one semester of
the two semester African American Experience AAP 591 and 592. The
course is designed so that students will be able to: understand
the forces that shape the current Black experience, understand the
current Black responses to issues, and understand the theme of
struggle as demonstrated by the African states.

A typical
Sophomore program includes:
Six Honors
College courses for the year (18 credits)
Two or three
Major courses for the year (6 to 9 credits)
Two or three
courses in the traditional curriculum (6 to 9 credits)
NOTE: All
Sophomores are required to meet with the Dean for pre-registration
at the end of each semester.
THE
JUNIOR HONORS EXPERIENCE
The Junior
Experience is Phase III of the Honors College curriculum. It
focuses on Commitment and Cross-Disciplinary Conversations.
(Acceptance into this phase requires a 3.0 GPA and completion of
Phase II requirements or approval of Dean.)
NOTE: JCSU
Juniors can enter into the Honors College as well as transfer
Juniors. The requirements for admission are the following: GPA of
3.0 or better; Junior status; completion of Freshman requirements;
completion of two mathematics courses; completion/or exempting of
two languages; interview with Dean and letter of recommendation
from faculty member. The new Juniors or transferring Juniors into
the Honors College are required to complete the following
requirements: one course from each BIN; three Honors Papers;
community service of 30 hours a year; active participation in the
Honors College; and completion of the Senior Integrative Seminar.

Independent Study (1 to 6 credits)
--There are
three types of independent study: collaborative projects, work in
your major, and gaps filled on a student’s curriculum. The student
needs approval from the Independent Study coordinator with
consultation by the major advisor. All projects will require an
oral presentation, a contract, and defense to the membership of
the Honors College.

of career and graduate/professional schools and writing samples)

and Self-Assessment Conference
Graduate or
professional school practice testing (GRE, LSAT, MCAT) and
counseling in the second semester. This will involve a workshop
that will be conducted by Honors College faculty and students.
NOTE: It is
encouraged that Honors College Juniors will elect either to study
abroad or at another domestic university for a semester, summer
internship, or a full year.

Two or three
Major courses each semester (15 to 18 credits)
One Independent
Study (1 to 6 credits)
Electives (3 to
9 credits)

THE SENIOR HONORS EXPERIENCE
The Senior
Experience is Phase IV of the Honors College curriculum. It
focuses on integration and synthesis. (Acceptance into this phase
requires a 3.0 GPA and completion of Phase III requirements or
approval of Dean.)
NOTE: Seniors
cannot transfer into the Honors College.
