ADVANCED FRESHMAN STUDIES 

The Freshman Experience is Phase I of the Honors College Curriculum. It focuses on Exploration and Inquiry. 

Semester I Requirements: 

  1. Course Work: HRHC 191-Freshman Rhetoric (3 credits), HON 131 Forum I
    (3 credits), HLS 130-Identity or HLS 235-Studies in Society, Honors College elective, usually mathematics or foreign language (3 credits), or HON 110 Natural Science (3 credits)

  1. Mentors are either Honors College core faculty or Advanced Freshman Studies instructors. Mentoring activities include:

  1. Service work (both Community and Justice components)--15 hours per semester
  2. Participation in a Collaborative Learning Team (two Freshman, one Upperclassman, the Dean, and the Mentor).  The five member team meets once each semester, while the three student members meet biweekly and report to their Mentor. The functions of Collaborative Learning Teams are: support, personal development, study group, organizing a course of study.
  3. Attendance at four convocations and two workshops per semester, any of which may be Honors College events.
  4. At midterm, mentors need to report all D’s and F’s to the Teaching and Learning Center so that students can be assigned support.

Semester II Requirements: 

  1. Course work: HRHC 192-Freshman Rhetoric (3 credits), HON 132 Forum II (3 credits), HLS 130-Identity or HLS 235-Studies in Society, Honors College electives, usually mathematics or foreign language (3 hours), HON 211 (1 credit), HON 110 Natural Science (3 credits)

  1. Portfolio Development--Self-development portfolios include documents which support the range of a student’s accomplishments such as narratives of service projects, letters of reference for off-campus achievements, commendations for service, etc.

  1. Completion of the Portfolio Development early in the spring semester.

  2. Completion of the written application for admission to the Honors College.

  1. Spring semester Class meeting with the Dean, concerning Honors College admissions, Plan of Study, and Second Year requirements.
  1. Development of the second year Plan of Study.

  1. Evaluations and Self-Assessment Conference with Mentor.

NOTE: In certain disciplines, the sequencing of courses is important and an early start is recommended (i.e. Music, Mathematics, Engineering, and the Sciences)
