Why Study at JCSU?

At JCSU, we know that not everyone who majors in history wants to get a law or graduate degree. That’s why we’ve tailored our program to also benefit students who want to enter the workforce right after graduation.

As a history major at JCSU, you won’t be memorizing dates or facts. We teach you how to think, read and analyze like a historian. Our professors emphasize research and writing to prepare you for a successful career after graduation or obtain a master’s degree or Ph.D.

We prepare you for success beyond the classroom.

Knowing how to research, write, speak and analyze are all key ingredients for a successful career. You’ll learn these skills and more through our public history scholars program.

Public historians study the past and show it to the public in a way that everyone can understand. Through our yearlong public history seminar and internship, you’ll have the opportunity to work in local museums, libraries and plantations. The information you learn here can be immediately applied to a job after you graduate.

Someone has to run our museums and libraries. Why not you?

Research opportunities you won’t find anywhere else.

You’ll get a firsthand account of history when you conduct research outside the library by:

  • Talking to people in the Charlotte community
  • Utilizing area courthouses
  • Learning how to read tax records and archived information

You can also take your education in history outside JCSU’s campus. Majors in our program have earned college credit through:

  • Summer law programs
  • Undergrad research at Ohio State University
  • An archeological dig with the University of Virginia at plantations owned by Thomas Jefferson

The real-world skills you’ll learn in these programs will help you find a job right out of school or continue onto graduate school if you want to further your education.

Personalized attention gives you the tools to succeed.

Our small classes help your professors get to know you and your career goals. They’ll guide you to exciting internships and out-of-class experiences that will help you make the most of your education.

JCSU history professors are passionate about the subjects they teach. In fact, our history professors often offer specialized classes that students express interest in, including topics like:

  • Origins of Islam
  • Soviet Union
  • Modern East Asia
  • Ancient Rome
  • American diplomacy

No matter where you want to focus your education in history, our professors have the knowledge and interest in helping you find your perfect fit.

Get involved in on-campus activities and organizations.

Your education doesn’t just begin and end with coursework.

Club activities with the Phi Alpha Theta honorary history society or the history club help you connect with other history majors and your professors outside the classroom. Guest speakers, class trips and career workshops enhance your knowledge and expose you to careers available to history majors.

Most importantly, you’ll learn the necessary real-world skills of asking the right questions and learning where to go to find the answers.
