Programs for Students

We have several programs specifically tailored to prepare our students for careers in their chosen fields.

The SEEDS program (Strategies for Ecology Education, Development and Sustainability) is a year-long opportunity for undergraduate students to gain an in-depth independent research experience with the guidance of a mentor.

MBRS-RISE is Minority Biomedical Research Support- Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement.  MBRS-RISE is a federally funded program for students interested in biomedical research, and it offers opportunities for students at all levels, as listed below.

For more information and applications for any of the MBRS-RISE programs, please contact
Mr. Sean Cornelious, 704-330-1462.  Please see the MBRS-RISE program webpage (use your JCSU user name and password, or use the button to login as a guest).

Summer Science Learning Community (SSLC)
A head start for first year students the summer before entering JCSU.  Begin your coursework early, tuition-free and get paid!
Recruiting and Nurturing Science-Oriented Matriculates (RANSOM)
For first year students only.  Attend workshops, work with JCSU professors and act as mentors to high school science students preparing for the annual Science Olympiad.
Science Help on Call (SHOC)
For JCSU Freshmen through Seniors who are hired to assist high school students preparing for the Science Olympiad competition.
Preparation for Research Excellence (PRE)
A summer program for underclassmen only. Students can earn 9 credit hours of instruction paid for by the program.   Starts mid May; ends mid July.
Team Approach to Research Excellence (TARE)
For Sophomores through Seniors.  This program pays students to work in research labs on and off the JCSU campus during the summer and during the academic year.
Supplemental Instructional Workshops (SIW)
1.5 hour-long workshops for students lead by faculty who teach the core Natural Sciences courses.  This program improves student performance in these courses and helps advanced students review for standardized tests, such as the GRE and MCAT.

JCSU Alliance for Minority Participation Program is open to first year math, biology, chemistry, computer science and engineering majors.  It offers advising, mentoring, tutors and hands-on research experience.   Students receive a stipend for attendance to workshops and seminars.
