Welcome to the Department of Social Sciences

The Department of Social Sciences at Johnson C. Smith University offers a host of academic experiences designed to train students for employment, graduate and law school and citizenship in a culturally diverse society. We offer majors in Criminology, History, Political Science, and Social Science with concentrations in Social Science and Social Studies Education. In addition, we also have two Minor programs in African and African-American Studies and Pre-Law.

Students graduating from our program are employed in a variety of professions: Social Studies teachers, police officers, probation and parole officers, museum archivists, campaign and congressional aids, lawyers and urban planners.

Recent graduates attend graduate schools such as Howard University, Michigan State University, University of Ohio and law schools such as Thurgood Marshall, NC Central University and the University of South Carolina

We also sponsor many activities that complement the academic experience including Black History Month events, Moot Court, Model United Nations, The Billy Club, and trips to law and graduate schools.
