The Degree

Students majoring in psychology at the University graduate with a B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) degree.

Graduation Requirements

In addition to the University requirements (e.g. 18 hours of Learning Across the Curriculum courses (Bio 142 substituting for LS 135), minimum of 122 hours with a minimum g.p.a. of 2.0, etc.), the Department of Psychology requires majors to complete successfully (“C” or better 33 hours in the discipline). These 33 hours are included in the 122 hours required by the University for graduation.

Students can complete the psychology major in four years by taking an average of 15-16 hours per semester (8 semesters x 15 hours = 120 hours; 8 semesters x 16 hours = 128 hours). The normal class load presently for University students is 12 to 18 hours.

Department Students (2003-2004)

The Department has over 100 students majoring in psychology. Majors are encouraged to augment their course work at the University by participating in research opportunities at larger research focused campuses, most often during the summer months.  Internships are frequently offered for credit by the department at local community agencies. Participation in both the research programs and internships is optional for students, but highly recommended as it allows students to apply what they learn in the classroom setting to “real life” situations. Such experiences are often recommended by graduate programs in the discipline and viewed as valuable to employers.

Department students are also encouraged to present the results of their research efforts at local and regional professional meetings. Psychology seniors have consistently been represented in the University’s Undergraduate Research Journal, a yearly publication of exemplary senior investigative papers.

What can I do with a major in Psychology?

The study of Psychology at the bachelor’s level can prepare the student for further study in psychology as well as, other professions. The strong people skills of Psychology majors coupled with the skill set outlined above make Psychology majors attractive to job recruiters. Psychologists with Master’s degrees may work under the direction of a doctoral psychologist, especially in clinical, counseling, school, and testing and measurement psychology.  Both doctoral – and master’s-level graduates may work in colleges and universities, industry, military settings, and health care organizations. Handouts with more career information are available in the Psychology Department.
