Students Evaluate Recycling Options

Curriculum and Outreach Energy and Climate Waste Prevention and Recycling Internal Culture

Last summer, students performed comprehensive research and analysis on sustainability efforts at JCSU. They evaluated the current recycling efforts on campus and studied the feasibility of a new campus recycling program based on researching other schools and their recycling programs and sustainability initiatives.

The interns also evaluated the availability and extent of historical energy data and met with the campus facilities director to discuss energy usage on campus. Their complete findings included best practice examples and analysis, a draft document on the structure of a good sustainability team, a glossary of terms on sustainability and conversion of campus building submetering data from Duke Energy into Excel format.

The next steps will outline the recycling options and costs for JCSU, present a final sustainability plan and timeline and a campus greenhouse gas inventory to establish the JCSU campus emissions baseline.
