Pursuing a greener lifestyle doesn’t just mean buying earth-friendly products or increasing your vegetable intakes. Studies today find that leading a healthier lifestyle -- one focused more on exercise and nutrition and less on processed foods -- is healthy for the environment too.
Hence Johnson C. Smith University’s newest health initiative - the construction of the HealthPlex. This new campus facility will also house the Center for Applied Health and Wellness research and programming. The primary focus of the JCSU HealthPlex is to assist faculty and staff in performing research in the fields of health, sport and human performance that benefit the University and the surrounding community. Student interns and student researchers will also be encouraged to become active participants in health, sport, and human performance research to gain valuable experience that will enhance their academic career.
Chosen research themes will reflect faculty and staff expertise and external support for research, including potential for funding. The success of research projects will advance the health and wellness field and lead to collaborative partnerships within health, education, government and industry sectors. From research conducted within the JCSU HealthPlex, health and wellness programs and initiatives will be designed and implemented that promote positive attitudes, healthily lifestyles and responsible self-care for the JCSU campus and surrounding community.
The Wellness Department will give staff, faculty, and students of JCSU free access to a health facility and wellness programming. Programming will address the unique needs and concerns of the JCSU campus and the surrounding community concerning health and wellness.
The HealthPlex will also be equipped with a fitness center featuring:
- Freemotion Fitness cardio and strength-training equipment
- a multipurpose room equipped with a teaching kitchen
- yoga/Pilates studio
- wellness programs
- group exercise classes
- aquatic programming
- locker rooms
- storage and office space
In addition to research performed at the HealthPlex, faculty, students and staff will have access to a variety of health and wellness programming designed to promote more active lifestyles on campus. Programming initiatives include:
