JCSU CLASS NOTES:
Class of 1927

The Black History Committee of Mount Holly, N.C., plans to place a monument at the orginal site of A. M. Rollins Elementary School, formerly Mount Holly Elementary School, in A. M. Rollins's (deceased) honor to preserve this important part of Mount Holly's history. Mount Holly Elementary School, the only black elementary school, opened in the 1930s and closed in 1967. Because of Rollins's inspirational leadership, the school was renamed while he still served as principal. 

 

Class of 1949

The 2008 Hall of Fame award was presented posthumously to The Reverend Fleming J. Means by the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce in Gaffney, S.C.

 

Class of 1953

Dr. Melva Wilson Costen was the keynote speaker at the Fayetteville Area Alumni Chapter inaugural scholarship banquet held at John D. Fuller, Sr. Recreation Center in Fayetteville, N.C.

 

Class of 1956

Congratulations to Beatrice Taylor Johnson, who celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary on February 26, 2008, with her husband, Col. (Ret.) Douglas L. Johnson, Sr.

 

Class of 1961

T. Willard Fair was a keynote speaker at Atkins High School's 50th year reunion in Winston-Salem, N.C. Fair told members of his class that they grew up in a time before t.v. dinners, contact lenses and credit cards, and a time when people got married first, then lived together. More than 50 members of the high school class returned for the reunion.

 

Class of 1973

A court naming ceremony was held in JCSU's Brayboy Gymnasium on February 29, 2008, in which the basketball court was named the Stephen Joyner, Sr. court.

 

Class of 1980

Timothy Corbett was featurned in the Virginian Times for his great work in family medicine. Over two decades ago, he served as a flight surgeon in the Air Force and that took him to places from Myrtle Beach to Bosnia. Corbett owns a private medical practice located on Commerce Street in Farmville and the pastor at Canaan Baptist Church in Vera, V.a.

 

Class of 1983

Henry George Gilmore III was inducted into Gardner-Webb University Gallery of Distinguished Graduates in February 2008. Gilmore currently serves as principal at Kings Mountain Intermediate School.

 

Class of 1989

Congratulations to Greg Bryant on his promotion to State Operations Executive with Wachovia Bank.

 

Class of 1991
JCSU has promoted Monika Rhue as its Director of Library Services for the campus’ James B. Duke Memorial Library. Rhue previously served as the acting director of the library since October 2007.

 

Class of 1999

Congratulations to Cheris Hodges on her book signing held at RealEyes Bookstore in Charlotte, NC. The title of her book is "Let's Get It On."

 

Class of 2007

Congratulations to Essence Caleb upon receiving the Trustee's Fellowship scholarship toward her graduate studies in English at Rutgers University. She will begin classes fall 2008.

 

Class of 2008

Congratulations to Jamilyah Muqtadir who has been accepted to Michigan State University Law School.

The Charlotte Chapter meets on the second Wednesday of each month @ 6:30 p.m. in Conference Rooms B & C (January through May) and (August through November) on the campus of JCSU.

Columbia Alumni Chapter
The Columbia Chapter holds its regular monthly meetings at 5:00 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Northminster Presbyterian Church, 6717 David Street, Columbia, SC 29203.

2008 MEETING DATES and EVENTS

Announcements: The chapter is pleased to announce the start of their monthly social. The social will be held the first Tuesday of each month from 6 - 8 p.m. Come out and catch up with old friends or make new friends. This is also an opportunity for you to hear about the chapter's activities and upcoming events. The location of the social will change monthly. Check your email regularly.

The Southern California Alumni Chapeter held its 9th Annual Blue & Gold Luncheon on April 13, 2008 in Los Angeles, Calif.  The honorees were Thomas McPhatter ('48) and Dr. Elmer A. Anderson ('47).

  • The Inez Moore Parker Archives is constructing a digital documentary of the Biddleville Quintets, and we need your help. We would like some information from alumni of that time. The Biddle University Quintets were founded in the mid - 1900s. The group performed at numerous commencement ceremonies and Presbyterian services.  We are asking our alumni who may have any general knowledge of the quintets, or artifacts such as programs, tickets, or any additional information, to assist us in this project.
