NOTES:
Class of
1941
Dr. Catherine McKee McCottry was featured in The Post and
Courier during Black History Month for her contribution to the city of Charleston, S.C. as its first black female obstetrician and
gynecologist. McCottry received a special recognition letter from the governor of S.C. commenting on her achievements and perseverance, as
cited in the article.
Class of 1947
Dr. Sandye Jean McIntyre, II was posthumously honored as an
ambassador in an article published in Morgan State University's "The Morgan Magazine," Volume 1, 2008.
Class of
1949
The late Reverend Fleming
J. Means, Sr. was inducted into the Cherokee County, S.C. Hall of Fame during the Chamber's Annual Meeting and Banquet held February 5,
2008.
Class of 1958
J. Charles Jones
was featured in The Charlotte Observer last month as a person preserving the history and culture of black life in the Charlotte region
including the Davis House near Johnson C. Smith. The house, built in 1890, was the home of George Davis, the first black professor at JCSU. Davis was
the N.C. agent for the Rosenwald Fund, which helped finance black schools across the South during segregation.
Congratulations to Johnny Myrl and his wife Dorothy Jay Lunsford of
Roxboro, N.C. who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on November 24, 2007, with a renewal of vows at First Baptist Church.
Class of 1963
Cornelia Curry and Constance Sims ('64) were
featured in The Charlotte Observer at the Bobcats Arena during the CIAA Tournament 2008 as they watched their beloved JCSU Golden Bulls
play.
Glenn Chavis spoke at the following locations during Black History
Month: Montlieu School, Congregational United Church of Christ, Washington Terrace Park, Roy Culler Center, AARP Group, Gethsemane Baptist Church,
and Shady Brook School. Chavis was also aired on MyFox WGHP regarding the local black history of High Point, N.C. The televised segment is said
to have been the longest aired on any non-news type story. What a wonderful work he is doing for our African American history!
Class of 1964
On February 21, 2008, in recognition of African American history month and the
theme "Carter G. Woodson and the Origins of Multiculturalism," U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Port of Charlotte, N.C., Martha
Gamble Hall, retired Greenville county, S.C. school principal, storyteller and education consultant, spoke to over 50 port employees and
regulatory auditors about leadership and the vast contributions contributed to the fabric of America.
Class of 1970
James "Jim" Ewers was recently presented with the 2008 Drum
Major Award from Reverend Michael A. Bailey, president of the Ministerial Alliance of Middletown. This award honors Ewers as a "drum major for peace,
justice and equality" in Middletown. Ewers is employed at Miami University at Middletown.
Class of 1973
Wanda Foy-Burroughs has been recently elected Northeast Region
representative for the Benjamin Banneker Association, Inc., a national mathematics organization whose goals are to serve as advocates for the
educational and professional needs of its members; to serve as an advocate for the educational and development needs of African American children;
and to provide educational solutions and policy alternatives to the educational issues which affect the participation and success of African American
children in mathematics achievement.
Class of 1980
Congratulations to Michael J. Graham who has joined ERA Tides Realty.
Graham has over 19 years experience in sales.
Congratulations to Charles M. Wilson on his promotion as
Director of Food Service Operations at Gaston College in Dallas, N.C. Gaston College has an enrollment of 5,000 students on three campuses and
serves Gaston and Lincoln counties. Wilson was recently elected as president of the College Stores Association of NC, Inc.
Class of 1981
Cynthia Walls Sankey was the guest speaker of the 8th Annual Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Business Reception held at the Sampson-Agri-Exposition Center in Clinton, N.C. Sankey is the manager of the Eastern Proposal
Center of Parsons Waker & Infrastructure in Atlanta, Ga. and a native of Clinton, N.C.
Class of 1982
Louis Lowery II was featured in Winston-Salem's The
Chronicle, regarding his son, Louis Lowery's progression into the game of basketball as an outstanding player at Parkland High School.
The elder Lowery earned the nickname of "Dr. Chocolate" for the way he worked with his fellow teammates on the basketball court and now his son
is being referred to as "Lil Chocolate".
Class of 1988
Gail Troupe-Tate was featured in the Diversity/Careers in
Engineering & Information magazine with regard to her position with Siemens Power as a supplier quality engineer. Her job is to make sure
that parts and materials meet spec. Troupe-Tate is also the liaison between the supplier and the company's own manufacturing folks. She is
a six sigma green belt, certified at Celanese in 2005, and became a lean sigma certified practitioner at Siemens in 2007.
Class of 1992
Congratulations to Jeffrey Smith who has been appointed vice
president for student affairs at Bethune-Cookman University, a historically black college in Daytona Beach, Fla. The school has an
enrollment of approximately 3,400 students. Smith will begin his duties there effective July 1, 2008.
Class of 2000
Congratulations to Kristene Brathwaite Kelly, who has been admitted to
the doctoral program at the US Sports Academy. Upon completion of the program, Kelly will be awarded the Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degree in sports
management. She will remain the sports information director at JCSU while completing her studies.
Class of 2003
Congratulations to Dsichulu L. Foster and his wife, Chantel, on the
birth of their son, Dillon Christopher Foster, on February 6, 2008. He weighed 7lbs., 12oz.
Class of 2005
CIAA Commissioner Leon Kerry and Food Lion's Senior Risk Management Specialist
Kia Gilliard were featured in the Carolina Peacemaker at a customer appreciation day held in Salisbury, N.C.
Class of 2006
Congratulations to Lakisha Jordan who is now teaching in Korea. Her SIP
was printed in the Undergraduate Research Journal.

- Dr. Yancy testified before the House of Education and Labor Committee
chaired by Representative George Miller (D-Calif) on February 22, 2008. Rep. Miller held a
hearing titled "America's Black Colleges and Universities: Models of Excellence and Challenges For the
Future."
- U. S. Representative Mel Watt (D-N.C.) spoke on campus March 18,
2008. His visit was sponsored by the Department of Social Sciences/Political
Science Program, Sophomore Initiative Learning Community, and the JCSU College Democrats. Watts is the recipient of an honorary
doctorate from JCSU.
- The Inez Moore Parker Archives is constructing a digital documentary of
the Biddleville Quintets, and we need your help. We would like some information
from alumni of that time. The Biddle University Quintets were founded in the mid - 1900s. The group performed at numerous commencement ceremonies and
Presbyterian services. We are asking our alumni who may have any general knowledge of the quintets, or artifacts such as programs, tickets, or
any additional information, to assist us in this project. Let us work together to restore the remarkable history of JCSU. For further information,

The JCSU 100 Club celebrated the championship (men's) and runner-up
(women's) of the 2008 CIAA Tournament with a slamming-jamming party. A few hundred alumni, boosters, and friends attended the event at the Holiday
Inn Center City on College Street. They had a slam-dunk good time!!! In the process, the party people helped the athletic boosters organization in
their continuing effort to generate annual contributions to support JCSU athletics. Thanks to all 100 Club members, JCSU alumni, family and
friends.
