Class of 1972
Congratulations to
Shelley Hinton on her appointment as principal of Garinger High
School in Charlotte, N.C.
Ken Koontz was featured in The Charlotte Observer for his role in
helping to preserve the Excelsior night club. During Black History Month, The Charlotte Observer is profiling people who
are preserving the history and culture of black life in the Charlotte region.
Class of 1973
Dr. Mark R. Royster,
Sr. was the featured speaker at the Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast held on January 21, 2008 at Oxford Baptist Church in Oxford,
N.C.
Class of 1975
The weekend of
February 15, 2008, was designated as "Curly Neal Weekend" during which the Harlem Globetrotters retired No. 22, the jersey number that
Freddie "Curly" Neal made famous during his 22 seasons with the team. As the fifth globetrotter to have his number retired,
Curly Neal joins Meadowlark Lemon and Wilt Chamberlain in a very exclusive club. This is a special honor that our alumnus deserves and we
congratulate him.

in Charlotte, N.C.
Class of 1978
Congratulations to state Representative Larry D. Hall
who was chosen as the grand marshal of the sixth annual Durham MLK Jr. holiday parade held January 19, 2008 in Durham, N.C.
Class of 1993
Congratulations to Alfredia
Moore who was recently appointed to the position of Director of Human Resources by the Pender County School Board. Moore earned her masters
degree in school administration and curriculum instruction from UNC-Pembroke in 2006.
Class of 1995
Chad Lassiter received the MLK Community
Involvement Award on January 23rd at the thirteenth annual Interfaith Commemoration of the Life of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. The article stated that Lassiter's research interest attempts to contribute to a more informed analysis of the diverse ways that
adolescents and families, especially people of color, cope with socioeconomic challenges and institutional racism. In May 2004, Lassiter was
named in Who's Who Among African Americans 17th along with such nobles as Michael Jordan and Colin Powell. He has worked on peace and
poverty related issues both in Africa and Israel.
Class of 1999
Congratulations to Cheris Hodges on the nomination of her latest novel "Just Can't Get Enough," for the Emma

Class of 2004
James E. Fullwood, Jr. was featured in Black Enterprise Magazine in an article entitled "The
Honda HBCU Alumni Spotlight". Fullwood talks about his experiences as a student at JCSU and why he chose JCSU among the other HBCU's.
Class of 2005
Congratulations to Tyrell
Hughes as the director of MODEL - Men Organized to Develop, Empower and Lead, Inc., a non-profit organization, he helped
launch in Albany, New York. Hughes wanted to change the perception of young black males, so he created this program targeting ages 12-18.
MODEL is designed to help develop positive individuals through mentorship, professionally, educationally, and personally.
Class of 2006
Nichole Johnson returned
to South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC), located in Olympia, Washington, 11th annual recruitment event to encourage students of color to
attend HBCU's. Johnson was encouraged to attend the recruitment day by Larry Jenkins, the founder of the Thurston Group. Johnson contributes the
recruitment event as a great influence in her decision to attend JCSU and is now attending Wake Forest University to become a doctor.
Freddie Davis was featured in the Gazette.Net, Maryland community online newspapers, for his
faceoff game on January 4 with Brandon Howell, his rival and best friend of eight years. Davis is coach of Northwood's junior-varsity girls
basketball team and his former JCSU school mate, Brandon Howell, is in the same capacity at Wheaton. Davis' Gladiators came out on
top.

Saturday, April 5, 2008, the Fayetteville Area Alumni Chapter will be hosting its first annual scholarship banquet at the John D.
Fuller, Sr. Recreational/Athletic Complex, 6627 Old Bunce Road, Fayetteville, NC 28314. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Melva Wilson Costen ('53).
All proceeds from the banquet will be used to provide scholarships for students. You may purchase an ad in the program booklet or donate items
to be raffled or given as door prizes. To date, the Fayetteville Area Alumni Chapter has been able to award small scholarships to students. All ads

unveiled before the start of the FSU vs. JCSU basketball game on February 19, 2008.

The Alumni Goal for FY 2008 is $700,000 (through 12/31/07). We have secured $225,107 from alumni
