JCSU CLASS
NOTES:
Class of 1940
Cecilia Richardson Trottie
was interviewed as a resident and member of the oldest black
congregation of Ladson Presbyterian Church, located in downtown
Columbia, S.C., for their 170th anniversary. Trottie, a
retired teacher and one of the congregation's oldest members, still
occupies the same pew in the historic Sumter Street church.
Class of 1952
Columbia lawyer, Hemphill
P. Pride II was also interviewed as a member of
Ladson Presbyterian Church. Pride and his family sit in the pew,
third from the rear, where his late parents, Hemphill and Maud Pride,
worshipped. Pride remembers himself as a squirming, inquisitive boy,
prone to exasperate his parents with church-hour antics and whose
father would march him across the church aisle and park him beside
another adult.
Class of 1956
Representative Pete Cunningham,
a Democrat who has represented parts of Charlotte in the N.C. House
of Representatives for 21 years, has resigned. Cunningham had been
the longest-serving member of Mecklenburg County's delegation to
Raleigh. He ran for office in 1986 after careers in the military and
in business and has never lost an election. Cunningham states he
plans to devote more time to his real estate business.
Class of 1959
The Hillhouse Hall of Fame welcomes Coach Willie T. Boyd
as an inductee at 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 2008 at the Country
House, Route 80, East Haven, CT. Friends and family may purchase
tickets by contacting Bob Davis @ Hillhouse High School, (203)
946-8486. Tickets are $45 per person.
Class of 1966
Congratulations to Herbert Gidney who was
recognized for the Men of Distinction Award during a December
event titled "Demonization of the Black Man: An American
Pastime" held by the Junior Class Council of JCSU. This honor is
awarded to men on campus who possess outstanding and superior
qualities in the university.
Class of 1969
Evelyn
Gentry Howie, a Surry County native and a long-time
educator in Los Angeles, was the guest speaker at the Martin
Luther King, Jr. holiday luncheon held in Mount Airy, N.C. In its
18th year, the luncheon was sponsored by the Surry County Branch of
the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
(NAACP). Howie highlighted the theme "Our heritage:
Reflecting, Advancing, Uniting." Howie holds a master's degree
and a resource specialist certification from Pepperdine
University.
Class of 1997
Master Allah (formerly known
as Eric Burgess), who co-started the Urban Brotherhood Task
Force program, was featured in The
Charlotte Post. The article states the
program, earlier known as Boys to Men, was started two years ago
to guide young brothers in a positive direction. Allah explained
that the name of the organization describes strength and
sticking together through brotherhood. The cardinal principles are
positive self-image, sound judgment, respect, responsibility, and
work ethics.
Class of 1999
The Dallas Weekly listed Shay Moore
as one of the 25 people to watch in Dallas for 2008. Moore is making
waves at KRNB-FM as the program director. She has worked at KSJM-FM
in Wichita, Kan., WPEG and WBAV in Charlotte, N.C. and WBLK in
Buffalo, N.Y.
Congratulations
to Terence E.
Guess and wife, Ingrid, on the birth of their
son Terence Ellsworth Guess, III. The baby boy weighed 8 lbs. 15 oz.
and is 21.5 inches long.
Class of 2002
Waddell Littlejohn
and his wife Kim were featured in The
Charlotte Observer as a love story. They had a band wedding
complete with instruments, band sweat suits and all of their closest
band friends. Instead of jumping a broom, as is tradition, the couple
jumped a drum major's mace and marched down the aisle
together. The couple met on the campus of JCSU.
Class of 2003
Congratulations to Ryanne
Persinger who has joined the staff of The Charlotte Post
as features editor. Persinger joins The Post from the Tulare Advance-Register
in California, where she covered education and general assignments.
Before Tulare, Persinger wrote for The
Capitol Outlook in Tallahassee, Fla.
Congratulations
to Sean
Langley on his position as community research
services director of the Urban Institute. Langley previously served
as social research associate for the Urban Institutes Community
Research and Services Division. He earned his master's degree
from UNC Charlotte.
Congratulations
to Lauren
Scott who has moved into the role of University
Recruiter Senior Associate for Grant Thornton. The former Miss
JCSU will now lead and manage the campus recruiting efforts and
internship program for the Carolinas region.
Class of 2004
Congratulations
to Margaret
Gregg who received the Master of Business
Administration degree with a concentration in accounting from Winthrop
University. Gregg has accepted a position with the Charleston County
School District as an accountant in the capital assets area.
Congratulations
to James E.
Fullwood, Jr. of Rosalyn Medical School in
Chicago, Ill. on his new book entitled "Stand Tall and
Graduate: An HBCU Experience" dedicated to JCSU. Fullwood's
book is geared to high school and freshmen college students, as well
as the everyday reader, to promote, support, and increase
African-American/Minority college enrollments and graduation rates.
