JCSU CLASS NOTES
Class of 1951
The Reverend Dr. Lawrence T. Glenn, Sr., received the Horbart Jackson Cultural Diversity Award for his commitment to
diversity. The ceremony took place before 10,000 delegates at the national meeting of the American Association of Homes and Services for the
Aging recently in Orlando, Fla. Reverend Glenn contributes his memorable moments to the overcoming opposition with the state in the
development of Detroit senior villages built in the city as well as suburban areas of Michigan. He is a member of the Executive Board of Presbyterian
Villages of Michigan where he was appointed in 1993.
Class of 1954
Bertha Maxwell
Roddey, Ph.D, was featured in The Charlotte Post as recipient of the Thurgood Marshall award. Roddey is a retired educator and
proceeds from the gala went to scholarships at public historically-black colleges.
Class of 1963
Congratulations to
Glenn Chavis on his nomination and selection for inclusion in the Who's Who in America 2008. Chavis specializes in local
African-American history and has written for The High Point Enterprise of High Point, N.C.
Class of 1966
John Troy McQueen spoke at the
Marlborough Historical Society on September 17, 2007 at the Marlborough Training School in Bennettsville, S.C. His career in education began in
1966 as principal of Marlborough Elementary. McQueen launched a career in authoring books in 1982. "Marlborough County Black Heritage," "a History of
the Black Churches," "A World Full of Monsters," and a "Biography of Edward James Sawyer," are just a few of his publications. His topic of discussion
was the history of the school that started in the 1920s.
On October 17, 2007 the Honorable Sandra L. Townes spoke at St. John's School of Law,
St. John University in New York. Townes earned her J.D. from Syracuse University College of Law in 1976. Upon graduation, she became an attorney in
the Special Victim's Bureau of the Onondaga County District Attorney's Office, rising to the position of chief assistant district attorney. Townes
was elected to a judicial post in the Syracuse City Court in 1988 and was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as a Federal District court
judge in 2004.
Class of 1968
The Reverend Edward T. Jones, II, ran for
office for Orangeburg School District 5 in Orangeburg, SC. After a 10-year seat in office, Jones was defeated.
Class of 1975
Carter Insurance & Financial Services, Inc., owned by
Luther Carter, was selected Business of the Month by Black Economics Business Exchange (BEBE10). BEBE10 is a free
communications tool for businesses owned by African Americans to encourage and support economic development. Carter Insurance & Financial Services
serves N.C, S.C. and Georgia.
Dr. Elaine Stevens, formerly of the "Matters of the Heart" radio show, leads a "TV
Relationship Segment" every Monday morning at 6:45 am on Fox News Rising, Charlotte, N.C. Stevens is also heard on "The Candy and Potter Show" on
107.9 FM and "The Link" every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., and provides the "Love Tip of the Day" on Q92.7, Monday through Friday at 8:20
p.m.
Class of 1981
Melvin Kilgore was the host at the 2007 South
Carolina Jazz Festival, October 19, 2007 in Cheraw, S.C. Kilgore has been a ratings success at V103 in Chicago since 1990. For the past 10
years, he has been heard on the "Love Zone" in over 50 cities nationwide and the Caribbean via ABC radio networks. He has emerged as one of the most
formable evening personalities in the country.
Class of 1982
Perry Solice was featured in the Sampson
Independent with regard to his family business as a car salesman in Clinton, N.C. Solice was a local environmental health specialist with
Sampson County but left to rejoined the family profession where he is a third generation car salesman.
Class of 1992
Congratulations to Janea D. Matchett who joins
The Keane Organization's Unclaimed Property Service Division as project manager for their new Atlanta office. Matchett received her law degree
from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Class of 1994
Congratulations to Tiwanna Hagans on the
opening of KokoMo's Coffeehouse located in uptown Charlotte. After the success of her Huntersville coffeehouse, which she says caters to stay-at-home
moms who live nearby, she felt a location uptown would appeal to the professional crowd. Hagans' hope is to tap into the growing scene of working
professionals and their desire for coffee.
Class of 1995
Nicole Balaam, CEO of B-Risque Fitness,
performed during the halftime show of the Charlotte Bobcats and the Indiana Pacers at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena November 9, 2007. B-Risque Fitness
currently has studios in Charlotte (3), Rock Hill, S.C. and Raleigh, NC.
Congratulations to Damian Johnson who will receive the Charlotte PRIZE Award for
business during a ceremony in January 2008. Johnson is the owner of No Grease Barbershop and Tonsorial School with three locations in Charlotte,
N.C.
Class of 1996
Greg Covington ran for office in the Monroe
City Council election, Monroe, N.C. Covington was defeated in a runoff.
Congratulations to Maurice Flowers who was chosen as Coach of the Week by the Carolina
Panthers. Flowers is the head football coach at West Charlotte High School. In recognition of Flowers' achievement, Carolina Panthers Charities will
donate $1,000 to the West Charlotte High School Athletic Department. Flowers, along with other winners, will be honored during the Panthers home game
against the Seattle Seahawks on December 16, 2007.
Class of 1998
Congratulations to Jasmine C. Smith who was
featured in the Business Leader magazine of Raleigh, N.C. as one of the 39 leaders who are transforming the Triangle. Smith is currently
employed with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina and completed her master's degree from Pfeiffer University. Her husband, Queron
Smith ('98), is by her side as the new co-chair of the African American Leadership Initiative for the Durham County region of Triangle
United Way.The Smiths plan to rally black leaders around a key focus area - youth mentorship - with the goal of closing the education achievement
gap. The couple met on the campus of JCSU.
Class of 2000
Congratulations to Alicia Nicki Washington,
Ph.D., who was featured in the Howard magazine as the youngest tenure-track faculty member in the Department of Systems and
Analysis in the College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Sciences. Washington inspires kids to advance in the field using nontraditional
approaches to teaching and learning such as creating virtual worlds and gaming as different approaches, which is not the standard in the classroom.
"I try to make students comfortable about careers in science, especially females. It can be intimidating staying in the program; this has been the
best part of teaching," said Washington.
Class of 2001
Congratulations to Shirlyn Oliver for
completing in May 2006 the Master of Science degree in organizational change and leadership at Pfeiffer University in Charlotte, N.C. Oliver is
employed with Wachovia Securities.
Class of 2004
Congratulations to Ronald J. Brown II
who received his Juris Doctor in May of 2007 from Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston, Texas.
Class of 2006
Congratulations to Brandi Johnson who is
pursuing graduate studies at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

- NCAA TV EXPOSURE OPPORTUNITY FOR JCSU WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM
The women's basketball contest at noon ET on Saturday, February 16, 2008, between JCSU and Shaw University (NC) has been selected by the NCAA Division II President's Council and
the NCAA Division II Media Advisory Group as the NCAA Division II Basketball Game of the Week. The location has not been confirmed. The game will be
available and streamed LIVE at www.NCAAsports.com/dii
- DARING STUDENTS TO DREAM!
Players from the JCSU football team stopped by to sit and talk with the fifth graders at Baringer Academic Center
in Charlotte, N.C. The athletes gave the students their lesson for the day called "Daring to Dream." The players also encouraged the students to
have pride in themselves and to not quit. At Baringer, 70% of the students perform at or above grade level. The story ran on WBTV with the assistance
of JCSU Sports Information Director Kristene Kelly ('95).
The Liberty Mutual Insurance Company is having a contest for the 2007 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year
