ONLINE NEWSLETTER LOOK
Beginning with this issue, our online alumni newsletter will look a
little different due to Microsoft 2007system upgrades. This means that
because the new program will not show background images, no borders will
be placed on the side of the newsletter. We hope this change will not
affect our readership and we thank you for your continued support.
SACS REAFFIRMS ACCREDITATION AT JCSU
 The
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges
(SACS) has reaffirmed accreditation at Johnson C. Smith University for
the next 10 years. JCSU’s last accreditation review was in the 1996-1997
fiscal year.
“We take the principles involved in accreditation very
seriously at JCSU, so we were expecting to receive this good report,”
said Johnson C. Smith President, Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy. “The
university has the highest commitment to institutional integrity,
accountability and quality improvement, and SACS has affirmed our efforts.
I am proud of the faculty, administration and staff who strive every day
to make the university such a dynamic institution.”
The latest designation means that the university has met
certain standards of quality in its educational programs and services and
has also shown that it has the resources to sustain the quality of these
programs and services.
SACS notified JCSU officials by letter that the
reaffirmation was granted during SACS meeting in June. In the letter,
Commission on Colleges President Dr. Belle S. Wheelan said “no additional
report was requested” from the university, meaning all of its documents
were in order.
SACS, located in Decatur,
Ga., consists of 77 members
elected by delegates from all 785 accredited colleges and universities in
the Southeast Region. This commission establishes the standards for
accreditation that must be met and also decides whether or not each
college and university meets those standards.
CLASS NOTES

Class of 1951
Congratulations to Lawrence T. Glenn and his wife of 50
years as they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on August 10,
2007. They were married in Altoona,
Pennsylvania on August 10,
1957.

Our own Glenn Chavis continues to receive accolades
for his continuing articles on the history of black people in High Point, North
Carolina, his hometown. The most recent
article, which appeared in The News & Record of High Point,
praised him for service he performs for the community and - for blacks
and whites. "His writing is unique, refreshing, and done without
bias." said Mr. Bob Burchette, editor.
Class of 1969
Principal, Bessie Hall Cooper, of Bensley Elementary School
in Chesterfield County,
Virginia has great news to
share. She states she has the poorest school in the county in which
78-87% of her students qualify for free or reduced lunches. Cooper says
she shares these school attributes because she wants you to understand
the significance of the national and state recognition her school has
received over the years. For 2006, Bensley Elementary won the State Title One
Distinguished School award and as principle she
was awarded the R.E.B. Distinguished Leadership award from the Community
Foundation. Bensley
Elementary School,
as well as Ms. Cooper, also won several other state and national awards
during the years of 2002 - 2005.
Congratulations to Dr. JoAnn Wright Haysbert,
president of Langston University in Langston, Oklahoma
for her election by Campus Compact as one of four board members elected
to lead civic engagement efforts. Leaders from the higher education,
foundation, and business sector will help guide 1,000 coalition of
college and university presidents to civic engagement. Haysbert has held
positions at the University of Hampton, Virginia State University and Alexander State Junior College.
Class of 1975
The Charlotte Observer featured an
article with regard to certain Charlotteans and their reminders of dad in
observance of Father's Day. Richard Campbell continues to use the
razor of his father, Garfield Campbell. Garfield would tell his son to be a man
you have to learn how to use this. Growing up, the sound of the razor was
the son's alarm clock. "After it's cleaned up, I'll turn it on and
listen for a while to the hum. Then I'll trim up my beard - and I'll know
he is with me." says Campbell. Campbell's father
passed seven days after he graduated from JCSU of multiple sclerosis.
Class of 1977

on loan to Virginia Tech from UNC-Chapel Hill and has spent his summer in
Blacksburg, Va., sorting out the difficult issues
of how universities should balance privacy, campus safety and treatment
of mentally ill students. He helped develop protocols for how to handle

BB&T COMMITS $500,000 TO JCSU
Winston-Salem, N.C.-based BB&T Corporation has made a major
commitment to endow the teaching of capitalism and free markets at
Johnson C. Smith University.
JCSU President Dorothy Cowser Yancy, joined by BB&T
Regional President Lewis Moore and BB&T Senior Vice President Tom
Baldwin, announced the $500,000 contribution on August 20, 2007, at the
university. “Capitalism and free markets are central to an economic
system that provides an improved standard of living. Our students will
benefit from a deeper understanding of the principles involved,” Yancy
said.
The BB&T Endowed Professor in Free Market Capitalism
will provide funding in the university’s Department of Business
Administration and Economics for a full-time faculty member. The faculty
member selected for the professorship will lead courses and lecture
series examining the moral and philosophical implications of capitalism,
based on writer Ayn Rand’s philosophy and her book “Atlas Shrugged.”
“Unfortunately, we find that many business graduates enter
the workplace without a firm grasp of the moral principles underlying the
free markets,” said BB&T Chairman and Chief Executive Officer John
Allison. “Our contribution will help Johnson C. Smith University provide
students a hands-on perspective on capitalism and free markets, a better
understanding of our economy, and an enhanced ability to make meaningful
contributions to the world.”
"This gift will ensure the long-term future of
excellence in business instruction at the university," said Marilyn
Sutton-Haywood, vice president of academic affairs. "We are all
enormously grateful for the support BB&T has provided for this
important area.”
BB&T sponsors similar academic programs at several
universities around the country, including Clemson University, UNC
Wilmington, and the University of Charleston (West Virginia).
With $127.6 billion in assets, BB&T Corporation is the
nation’s 11th largest financial holding company. It operates more than
1,500 financial centers in the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, West
Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Indiana and
Washington, D.C.
DR. SUTTON-HAYWOOD TO LEAVE JCSU
Dr.
Marilyn Sutton-Haywood, vice president for academic affairs, has accepted
a position at Bethune-Cookman University, Daytona Beach, Fla., effective
January 1, 2008. She will serve as the vice president for academic
affairs at B-CU. Sutton-Haywood is an associate professor of biology,
science technology and ethics at JCSU. She has previously held positions
as assistant professor of biology and mathematics at Belmont Abbey
College, Belmont, NC, and as an assistant professor in the natural
science and allied health department at Kennesaw State University,
Marietta, GA.
