JCSU CLASS NOTES
Class of 1945
Esther Nell K. Glymph Witherspoon, a native of Gaffney,
SC, was listed as one of the 10 "Notable African American Women: In
Their Own Voices". This documentary notes the former librarian,
humanitarian, social activist, life time member of the United
Methodist Church, and widow of minister and educator, Dr. James
Witherspoon. "In Their Own Voices" is a beginning celebration of
African-American women from South Carolina who have helped shape
lives and change their communities and, the state and the country
through ordinary acts of courage.
Class of 1946
Kinston, NC native Ola M. Bryant Watford broke
down a number of barriers in building a career as a geophysicist and
a top official with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA). Featured in The Free Press during Black
History Month, Watford began her work with the federal government as
a statistics clerk in the Naval Oceanographic Office in 1951. By
1973, she was employed as the only female staff geophysicist in the
Department of Commerce. She eventually rose to become chief of the
Space Management and Design Branch of NOAA. Watford credited
education with opening a world of possibilities for her.
Class of 1957
Joe Craig was featured in the Asheville Citizen-Times
during black history month. Craig played center for coach Stonewall
Jackson, who played with the NY Giants. He was an all-CIAA selection
for the 1956-57 season and was a starter who played both ways for 60
minutes, never suffering an injury in his final three seasons. "In
college when I played it didn't matter how many touchdowns we had
run or how much talent we had. If we didn't maintain a C average, we
didn't play. We were students first and athletes second."
Class of 1980
Congratulations to Wilbert Harper for his
promotion to the position of SVP, Senior Risk Officer of First
Charter Corporation (NASDAQ:FCTR). Harper is responsible for
commercial risk management in the Charlotte, Monroe, Lincolnton, and
Lake Norman markets.
Class of 1995
Featured in the Charlotte Weekly, head PTA
advocate Kim Graham analyzes the current state of Charlotte
Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). After buying a Parent-Teacher Association
raffle ticket seven years ago, she embarked on her quest as an
elementary school volunteer to becoming president of the Charlotte
Mecklenburg Council of PTAs and PTSAs, Inc., overseeing, training
and recruiting more than 130 PTA groups of CMS's 160 schools. When
asked why bother giving up her valuable free time - spending time
away from her children - to better the area's troubled education
system, she answered, "Because I firmly believe that student
achievement is deeply connected to parent involvement. A school's
PTA is conduit for helping parents be the best teachers they can
be…if they would become involved. The kids who need the most need
teachers who can give the most."
Class of 1999
As she approaches her next birthday, Cheris
Hodges, has much to celebrate. She has come a long way since she
self-published her first book in 2001 and is currently geating up
for her seventh romance novel, Just Can't Get Enough, to hit shelves
in August. A former police and courts reporter at the Covington News
in Covington, Ga., Hodges' novels too were born from the stress of
her job. She began writing novels to relieve the tension she
experienced at work, but soon enough, her hobby became her life.
