THREE STUDENTS AWARDED SIEMENS SCHOLARSHIPS
Three Johnson C. Smith University students are among the winners of the 2007 Siemens Teacher Scholarships, a collaboration between the United Negro College Fund, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and the Siemens Foundation. This year, 49 students enrolled at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) will receive an average scholarship of $2,000.JCSU students Sandra Curtis (mathematics education), Marcus Graham (mathematics), and Brian Nelson (mathematics education) were awarded the scholarships to help supplement their educational costs toward a teaching degree in math and science. As bachelor degrees awarded in science, technology, engineering and math decline, HBCUs play a vital role in achieving diversity among science professionals. A 2005 report by the Southern Education Foundation found that southern HBCUs are producing almost one-fourth of the African-American college graduates in the sciences. JCSU continues to be one of the top producers of graduates in computer science and engineering, ranked 29th in the nation in 2006.

JCSU UNCF PRE-ALUMNI COUNCIL (PAC)
The PAC of JCSU attended the 61st National Alumni Council and 49th National Pre-Alumni Council Anniversary Conference held in Nashville, Tennessee on January 31 – February 3, 2007 and this is what they had to say:Often times it is very rare that you are able to go to a conference and be able to connect and identify with other colleagues, on issues that are pertinent information that not only concerns our generation as a whole, but the generation which we will birth that proceeds after us. Being able to go to Nashville, Tennessee, was an amazing experience and opportunity. It was such an honor and absolute privilege to be among so many esteemed African Americans. In the workshops attended we learned about leadership. In this century it is very necessary to have good leadership skills, those who have it advance more rapidly in society, in education, and more importantly in life. Budgeting classes were also a very important class because we learned if we work hard and stop spending money frivolously, we could own our first homes before 25. A task unfortunately not offered to many young African Americans today. The workshops were good in the sense that not all of them were lecture oriented. Many of the speakers had what you would call in church, call and response. The call and response type set of workshop allowed for students to hear others points of views and also comment or respond to other comments in a positive way. Overall the United Negro College Fund National Alumni and National Pre-Alumni Conference was an experience that every African American should be able to witness, old and young. The council members that attended the conference were Tina Townsend, Aljamon Alexander, Francesca Pierce, Aisha Lide and Brittany Alexander. All students were accompanied by their advisor, Ron Matthews.

100 CLUB CORNER- CIAA TAILGATE PARTY
“The JCSU 100 Club” literally cornered CIAA traffic with its tailgate and hospitality setup at the uptown intersection of Fifth and Caldwell Streets directly across from the Charlotte Bobcats Arena, scene of the 2007 CIAA Basketball Tournament. The project centerpiece featured two recreational vehicles as the lounges with specially catered food sponsored by BI-LO and arranged by JCSU alumni and 100 Club member Helen Ellis, Director of Deli and Bakery Services for the grocery food chain. The event was the brainchild of JCSU 100 Club members Luther Carter and Ken Koontz. They were joined in the management, operations and hosting duties by 100 Club members Al Barnes, Walter and Mary Dewalt, Tommie and Hattie Dewalt, Kiter Patterson, Delores Lee, Marie Carter, Nancy Carter, Brandon Carter, Dan Harvin and Dunbar Austin. The RV’s were arranged by Mickel “Cheese” Rosborough and Koontz’s All-Stars Communications, a satellite uplink and television production company that worked with Tom Johnson Camping Center of Concord. The JCSU 100 Club’s Tailgate and Hospitality was set up to attract new 100 Club memberships and to urge old members to renew theirs. Non-affiliated passers-by and those aligned with other schools were urged to drop in for some great food, and/or make a contribution to The 100 Club. Carter says the event served more than 3,000 CIAA fans and helped forge some new 100 Club partnerships and interests. “This was a great experience for our club and a definite boost for the start of our 2007 Membership Drive,” says Carter. “The membership and other JCSU supporters should be proud of the effort we put forth on behalf of our school’s athletic program,” he adds. A group of local black businessmen, JCSU alumni and supporters established The JCSU 100 Club more than 40 years ago primarily as a fundraising organization to raise money to support the Johnson C. Smith University athletics department and its programs including scholarship and financial aid to student athletes. Carter says the organization contributed more than $25,000 to that effort in 2006.
