CLASS NOTES
 Class of 1949Congratulations to Herman C. Ragin, Sr. The old Perry Elementary School in Perry, Georgia was renamed The Herman C. Ragin Center in his honor. He taught in North Carolina before returning to his hometown to become the first black head football coach and athletic director in Houston County, Georgia. He taught science and coached at the high school level from 1953 to 1964. In 1964, he became the first principal at King's Chapel Elementary and remained there until his retirement in 1980. Ragin still resides in Houston County and is an active member of the community. Class of 1958 Congratulations to Johnny Myrl Lunsford on winning the candidacy for the county commissioner of Person County. He was re-elected for his fourth term and is also serving his seventh year as the chairman of the board. Class of 1959 William T. Holmes was a candidate for the Chester County School Board District 6 Seat. Holmes, retired educator, served 10+ years on the Greenwood County School Board in South Carolina. Class of 1960 John Crawford was a recipient of the 2007 Individual Spirit Award. Crawford is the founder of the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund (CHASF) and on a quest to raise $5 million for the fund. Class of 1961 Congratulations to Talmadge Willard Fair who has been appointed to serve as Florida's education chairman. "My selection as chairman is a testament to the fact that it does not matter who you are, what you look like or where you come from - you can be a part of something great and be tapped for extraordinary things," says Fair in an article in the Miami Times. In addition, the Board of Education is responsible for the adoption of the K-20 education budget. It serves 67 school districts and 28 community colleges with a combined student enrollment of 3.4 million. Class of 1962 Congratulations to Senator Charlie Smith Dannelly for being re-elected as Deputy President Pro Tem, the No. 2 office in the NC Senate. Class of 1968 Congratulations to Frank Franklin who will receive the UNCF Distinguished Alumnus Award at the UNCF 63rd Anniversary Dinner in New York on March 9, 2007. President George H. W. Bush and President William J. Clinton will be awarded the Frederich D. Patterson Award. Class of 1970 Visit the December issue of Diverse magazine at www.diverseeducation.com to read James Ewers' article entitled, "Oversized Pants, Undersized Goals of Today's Youth". He is the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Miami University at Middletown.Class of 1971 Marilyn Ford was selected Lake View High School Teacher of the Year in Lake View, South Carolina. "To express independent rational thinking, encourage creativity, achievement, to become good law abiding citizens and an independent functioning member of the community are values that are frequently incorporated into my teaching," says Ford in an article in the Dillon Herald. Van J. Stitt, Jr., MD was featured in The Charlotte Observer for his kind approach to patients. As a family practitioner with a geriatrics background, Stitt wanted to return to work that made an immediate impact with patients. As he grows older he could empathize with many concerns about aging. Stitt came to his job at Gaston Family Medical Center last spring after serving as Gaston Memorial's vice president of medical affairs in Gastonia, NC. Since the practice opened in May he has been the recipient of cornbread, tomatoes, a birthday cake and an afghan, all gifts from grateful patients. According to the article, Stitt says he has never felt more appreciated. The article also states that in surveys geriatricians report the highest job satisfaction of any specialists. Class of 1975 Congratulations to Stan Frazier, the fourth principal at six-year-old Waddell High. District Superintendent Peter Gorman says of Frazier, the school system's reigning principal of the year, "Every single child everyone knows they are important when they are around Stan." Frazier is trying to build the school around some previous reform efforts, including a program that allows seniors to graduate with about 40 hours of college credit through courses offered by Central Piedmont Community College. But first, he said, he must convince the students and staff he cares. Class of 1979 Congratulations to William J. Crutchfield who received the May 2006 teacher of the month award for the Coca-Cola Community Connection. Class of 1981 Lydia Sharon Garrett was honored in the 2007 South Carolina African American History Calendar. The Columbia, SC native is an actor who has appeared on numerous television shows including "A Different World," "Days of Our Lives," and "The Steve Harvey Show." In 1984, Garrett was crowned the seventeenth Miss Black America. Class of 1983 Cary Mitchell was featured in the The Charlotte Observer and The Charlotte Post about his volunteer efforts to assist the MLK Middle School in designing their school uniforms if the students are able to get involved. The Charlotte clothier has been working with the eighth-graders to design something different from the plain blue shirts and khaki pants they now wear at school. Mitchell said he was looking for a way to volunteer in schools. For Mitchell it's an opportunity to share his trade with up and coming designers and introduce a project that could become a model for introducing school uniforms to schools. Class of 1984 Juan Flowers is a content manager with Microsoft and heads the second part of the program in designing school uniforms for the MLK Middle School which is the online portion. Flowers says the students now have a chance to read about their project. He met with Cary Mitchell, some months ago at Microsoft to discuss creating a web blog for the students now offered through Microsoft. Class of 1985 Matthew Scott, the son of Leon Scott ('85) and Odishi Johnson Scott ('86) was recently elected to the Davidson College Honor Council in Davidson, North Carolina. The council is a student-led disciplinary body that is the primary judiciary organ at Davidson. It is responsible for hearing cases involving alleged violations of the Honor Code and Code of Responsibility. Class of 1990 Devoria Keaton Berry received her Masters in Social Work from Fayetteville State University in May 2006 and graduated with honors. Devoria is employed as a case manager/community support professional at Assisted Care, located in Wilmington, North Carolina and serves as an after hours on call clinical counselor at Southeastern Mental Health Center's Crisis Station. - Class of 1995 Brian Johnson, UNCF/Mellon Fellow, was named Director of Claflin University's Jonathan Jasper Wright Institute for the Study of Southern African American History, Culture and Policy. He is the Associate Professor of English at Claflin University. Read his article on the website at www.mmuf.orgThe members of Buncombe Baptist Church welcomed their new pastor, the Reverend Claude Ellis Forehand II, this month with a celebration at the Edward C. Smith Civic Center in Lexington, NC. Forehand says he hopes to develop Buncombe into a "church in the city," meaning that it will be a church that not only supports and cares for its members but cares for churches of all denominations and citizens of all ethnic backgrounds throughout Davidson County. "I want to build relationships, " Forehand said, "What is unacceptable is to have so many churches in such a small area, and they don't even know each other, although we know the same God."Class of 1998 Patricia Porter is the new media relations director for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). Prior to joining the MEAC, Porter served as the director of communications for Southwest Basketball LLC. Class of 2001 Keeanga Y. Speakes-Asiam graduated with an M.Ed in Social Science from Alabama State University and did a study in Cape Coast, Ghana, West Africa this past summer with the University of Minnesota. Class of 2003 Akilah Luke is on her way to El Savador for the month of February 2007 to help build homes for Habitat for Humanity and is very excited about being able to help Habitat for Humanity in this way.

JCSU PROMOTES TWO EMPLOYEES
Johnson C. Smith University has promoted two of its employees to serve as Director of Foundation Relations and Private Grants and Director of Institutional Planning, Assessment, Effectiveness and Research. The positions are effective December 4, 2006.Evelyn Leathers is the new Director of Foundation Relations and Private Grants. Leathers has worked with JCSU for almost three years as its development officer. The Kelly, N.C. native received her Master’s of Science in Adult Education from North Carolina A & T State University in Greensboro, N.C. She pursued further graduate work at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in Blacksburg, Va. Leathers obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in political science also from North Carolina A & T State University. Kelli Rainey is the new Interim Director of Institutional Planning, Assessment, Effectiveness and Research. Rainey started working with the university in 2004 as the Director of Student Activities. She has a Master of Arts in applied psychology, industrial and organizational development from Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn. She also has a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications from Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Va. “Each of these employees has shown leadership in their former positions and I feel they will be a perfect fit in their new University roles,” said Johnson C. Smith President, Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy.

JCSU WINS INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
For the second year in a row, a team of JCSU students won the Wake Forest M.L. King Jr. Basketball Invitational. Held in Winston-Salem, N.C. on January 20, 2007, the tournament pitted the JCSU intramural team against Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State, before advancing JCSU to the championship game against North Carolina A&T. JCSU defeated A&T with a score of 68-61. JCSU is invited to participate in the National Intramural Basketball Tournament at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill, April 27-29, 2007. The team is advised by Alfred Carter, intramural coordinator. Players on the JCSU first team were Daniel Watkins, Travoris “Vedo” Howerton, Alijamon “AJ” Alexander, Prince Parker, Mike McCord, and Pierre Stinton. McCord and Parker made the All-Tournament Team, and Parker was named tournament MVP. JCSU student Avery Floyd won the slam dunk contest.
